An Introduction to Sewing

2.5 hours 1 to 3 label $80 - $85 ($85 per person when you book for 1 student, $80 pp for 2+ students)

In this workshop you will learn the basics of setting up a sewing machine. You will learn about the different stitches and when best to use them. Once you've had a practice run on some scrap material, we'll put your new skills to practice by creating a simple square cushion cover. You will be working on a beginners sewing machine that is extremely easy and functional to use.

In this class you will learn:
- How to set up a sewing machine
- How to wind a bobbin and insert it into the machine
- Measure, mark and cut your fabric for the cushion cover
- Use of different tools for a cleaner finish

Throughout the session I will share my knowledge and tips with you to help make the process as smoothly and enjoyable as possible.

Classes run for 2-3 hours.
The sessions are held at Sophie's art studio in Redfern. The building is occupied by talented artists, exhibitions and co-working spaces.

You will leave the class with your new sewing skills, a fab cushion cover and access to our online PDF handout of the class.

Creativity is, and always has been, the driving force in Sophie's life. From an early age she would always swap the dolls and toys for a pen and notepad. Sophie never minded being left to her own devices while her parents needed to go shopping. With a colouring-in book to hand Sophie happily sat quietly either scribbling away or patiently filling in each tiny hole in the fabric of her red tights – the latter much to their frustration.

Sophie's creativity and passion for art led to an interest in fabrics, sewing and textiles. From here she applied to the top five universities for textiles. Following a number of interviews, she waited patiently hoping to receive an offer from Birmingham City University (BCU).
BCU had the course that stood out the most to her - with their endless resources and fabulous tutors. To Sophie's delight, BCU granted an unconditional offer which she accepted immediately. It was here that she found her feet in the textiles profession, where she developed the skills and techniques that would guide her on her own journey in mixed media.

Studying textiles soon led to developing a specialism in embroidery, during Sophie's third year she found herself trying new things, experimenting with new mediums and combining sewing with metal work. The completion of Sophie's final third year project was a great personal achievement, as it merited a space at the prestigious New Designers exhibition in London. Here are some of the fabrics and metals manipulated metal Sophie showcased at New Designers.

Since graduating, Sophie has won multiple awards for her work and showcased some of her favourite pieces at the National Eisteddfod Wales (the largest music and poetry festival in Europe). She has also collaborated with other artists and finished multiple commission pieces for clients in Australia and the UK.

Following Sophie's graduation, she decided to travel to Australia and Asia. During her travels, Sophie would seek out any opportunity to learn a different craft, she found herself learning the skill of Javanese Batik in Indonesia, weaving natural leaves with indigenous Australians, and observing silversmithing at a high-end jewellery factory in Bali.
During her travels, Sophie fell in love with Sydney and eventually settled in Surry Hills. Her creative journey has taught her how to manipulate materials, experiment, make mistakes and continue to push boundaries. Through endless hours of experimenting, she has developed distinctive techniques in different mediums which she now combines into various forms of art. Working from her art studio in Redfern, Sophie draws inspiration from her surroundings and will spend hours creating a single piece of art.

One of her favourite mediums at the moment is resin. Sophie will carefully select pigments to colour the resin before mixing each cup of colour and applying them to the art board. Various techniques will be applied to manipulate the resin and create different effects, leaving the finished piece a truly unique, one-of-a-kind masterpiece that can never be replicated. Some of the resin artwork will take weeks to complete as each layer must cure before the next is added.

Sophie and the class itself was great. It’s simple, straight forward and rewarding for beginner level. Sophie was very helpful and patient too. I brought my own machine and Sophie was very accomodating. She let me have the flexibility to use my machine and hers, at the same time she helped me get familiar with my own machine. Thanks again Sophie!

Sophie was fantastic
She was really friendly and informative and detailed.
She guided me through every step with such precision.
She was played back and relaxed and allowed us to have time to practice different techniques and the ins and outs of a sewing machine usage.
We had a few laughs and she really focused it on getting the technique right so that our end result was perfect.
Her tips and trick where very helpful. Even though space was small it was tidy showing she had much love for her craft.
