On this two-hour, three-kilometre long walking tour through the heart of Canberra, you will uncover the stories of the incredible women history has forgotten.

You'll discover Australia’s hidden history as you walk among some of our nation’s most iconic cultural institutions and monuments. Hidden between the National Archives, the National Library and the National Gallery are the stories of women who designed cities, changed Australia’s constitution and dismissed governments.

At Federation Fountain, you will hear the remarkable tale of a mother’s journey to the Front. At the High Court of Australia and Reconciliation Place, you’ll be captivated by the stories of women who fought for Indigenous sovereignty, rights and recognition.

At the end of the tour, you'll return to the Ladies Rose Garden with a transformed view of Canberra and our nation’s history.

With both locals and visitors in mind, She Shapes History will walk you through the story of our nation from the perspective of Australian women. You'll hear stories of friendship, survival, creativity, rebellion and love.

Your teacher

Hi! We're Sita (she/her) and Ripley (they/them). She Shapes History is our queer-people-of-colour-owned tourism business.

When we first met back in 2017, we instantly hit it off, but soon found ourselves on opposite sides of the country. We both moved back to Canberra in early 2021 and reconnected over a cup of coffee. That's when She Shapes History was born. We have been inseparable since.

We created She Shapes History to share the inclusive and diverse account of Australian history hidden in Canberra’s landscape.

We grew up hearing only one version of Australian history. But as we got older, we discovered that our country has a rich and diverse history. One where the first tour operator was African American, where First Nations women voted in 1894, and where a woman designed our nation’s capital.

We genuinely believe that by delivering these tours, researching these histories, and curating these stories, we too can shape history.

Join us on a tour!!
