Beginners Clay Hand-building Course

Learn to make and glaze ceramics in this two-part pottery course!

2 x 2.5 hours Class size 1 to 5     label $250

In this workshop series, you’ll learn the basics of ceramic hand-building and simple glaze and colour design.

This class is ideal for beginners with little or no experience, or anyone interested in learning the technical skills involved in making ceramics by hand. There are two sessions in total, held across a fortnight on Saturday. All your materials, tools and clay firing will be provided, along with tea and light refreshments as we learn and create together!

Session 1: Hand-building Basics
This session begins with an introduction to clay followed by a live art demonstration of two foundational hand-building techniques: Pinched Pottery and Coil Construction. We use these techniques to create everyday, functional objects without the need for a pottery wheel – such as teacups, small mugs, spoons and trinket dishes! Participants will have total freedom to make their own individual pieces, and simple tools for incorporating texture will be introduced. There are no limits to what we can make with clay, so let’s get our hands dirty! This session is two-and-a-half hours.

Session 2: Glaze and Colour
After the first session, participants will return for an opportunity to glaze and colour their work. We’ll learn how to combine basic glazes and coloured underglazes to achieve different decorative effects. This will add the finishing touches to your pieces and personalise them! Glazing and colouring are exciting parts of the handmade process that will deepen your appreciation of ceramics. This session is two hours.
