Start your bookbinding journey in the heart of Sydney Inner West from master bookbinder Isabelle McGowan, who has taught in Europe for over 15 years.

For those who prefer a slower-paced class, you will still bind five books over two relaxing days - five different bookbinding techniques and learn how to construct a handmade box.

One of the best course aimed at absolute Beginners level, designed for everyone. The aim of this course is to familiarise you with the necessary knowledge and skills to start you on a journey to make your own books.

This course is designed to provide a good working knowledge of materials and techniques. You will develop skills in both the production and design of handmade books enabling you to go onto more complex and experimental bindings.

Traditional book structures are explored, using materials that will endure over time.
Over two days you will learn how to make:

Day 1
i) A 5 holes single section pamphlet book, finished with hard cover and decorative paper

ii) A Japanese Stab Binding in hardcover, full book cloth, lined with decorative paper

iii) A Venetian Journal covered in full leather with decorative stitching and a leather tie

Day 2
iv) A Turkish fold book with hard cover

v) An expandable Concertina Book

vi) A beautiful keepsake box covered in specialty marbled paper to bring home all your beautiful creations

• Learn skills fundamental to hand bookbinding and be able to repeat and practice at home.
• Use a variety of tools and materials and how to apply them to the sewing and construction of your book.
• Learn grain direction, paper cutting, sewing sections and covering, select and use appropriate materials

Knowledge required
This is a technical workshop. No experience is necessary, but the workshop requires a certain level of capability and confidence in using sharp instruments and being able to follow verbal instructions is expected.

Isabelle offers the largest programme of bookbinding classes for all levels in Sydney. There are workshops covering every stage from beginner to those needing more expertise.

Her specialty is in Traditional Fine Binding and along with her degree in Fine Arts, she has a great interest in Artists Books and how that can be utilised as part of your visual language.

Isabelle completed her Fine Arts Degree (Drawing and Painting, Printmaking) at the Edinburgh College of Art, in Scotland. She went on to train as a Bookbinder in Florence, Italy. Isabelle taught the largest programme of bookbinding classes through her bindery the Owl and Lion, situated in Old Town Edinburgh, Scotland. She also travels to teach all over the UK and Europe.

Covid Update for 15th February 2021 -
The Bindery is registered as a Covid Safe Business through nsw.gov.au. Following Government regulations we implement the following measure:
Staff and visitors who are unwell will be told to stay home.
If you feel unwell, even at the last moment, do contct us and we shall arrange another class for you (evidence of a covid test could be requested).
We support distancing during class with ample workspace for each participant.
Students are assigned to specific work station and minimise movement will be encouraged between these stations, where reasonably practical.
Hand washing and hand sanitisers are provided throughout, along with individual towels to wipe and dry your hands.
Frequently used areas and equipment are cleaned frequently with disinfectant.
