I had such a fantastic day at Jack’s Raku firing workshop on Friday. Jack did an incredible job fitting in three firings throughout the day, which meant everyone had plenty of opportunities to experiment, and the results were absolutely stunning.

I didn’t have any of my own bisque-fired pieces ready, so I bought a few beautiful pieces from Jack to glaze instead, and I’m so glad I did. There was an excellent selection of glazes to choose from, making it easy to create some really unique finishes.

It was also a real treat spending the day in Jack’s studio. They were in the middle of a five-day wood firing, so there were other potters around as well, which created such a welcoming, creative atmosphere. Lunch was a lovely shared spread, with everyone bringing something to contribute, and it really added to the sense of community.

All in all, it was an amazing experience. Whether you’ve done Raku before or you’re trying it for the first time, I’d highly recommend this workshop. I’ll definitely be back for another one!

What a wonderful immersive experience our all day raku workshop was at Studio Nioka in Research! Introduced to this traditional process by our host Jack we were guided to select glazes from an array of examples to decorate our ceramic forms. Some of us had already come prepared bringing our pre-made bisqued ware to the workshop, but pots were also kindly provided courtesy of Tania from the Kiln Room. Three different kilns had been purpose built for the occasion in the grounds outside Jack’s studio and this is where the real magic began. As we watched Jack seamlessly stack and fire each kiln on repeat throughout the day, we were continuously excited by the transformation each pot revealed. Not only delighted by our own surprising and creative results, but in awe and wonder at the incredible diversity of our collective talents! True camaraderie prevailed! Personally, I am ready to do it all again, and soon!

Had a wonderful time at Jack’s Raku workshop. We started the day with Jack explaining the history and process of Raku, then we went on to start our glazing while the kilns warmed up. Popped the first batch in, finished our glazing and then had a lovely shared lunch while we waited for results. After lunch things got firey and busy and then wrapped up the day with washing our pots to see our results

It was a great workshop, very fun, and Jack was a great teacher and Raku guide!
