Street food in Asia is popular with travellers for reasons from the rich and diverse culture to the diversity of flavours and styles that won’t set your wallet back. For home cooks, it gives them a wide range of cuisines for home cooking or entertaining. Cooking street food at home could send your taste buds reeling!

Typically big on flavour, our street food menu in this live streaming class can generally be taken as a snack or as a main course partnered with rice or any other popular staple. So, here’s a challenge: getting to know each country through its street food.

Your expert Otao chef will give you plenty of cooking tips throughout the class and at the end, you can sit back and enjoy your meal with your fellow cooks virtually.

  • Nam Phrik Kaeng Daeng - red curry paste and Prik Nam Plaa (fish sauce dressing)
  •  Tod Man Khao Pod - corn fritters
  • Hor Amok - red curry fish steamed in banana leaf

Vietnamese menu (Feb, Jun, Oct)
  • Bun Cha - Vietnamese pork BBQ
  •  Nem Nướng - grilled pork sausage

Japanese menu (Mar, Jul, Nov)
  • Karaage Japanese fried chicken with pickled vegetables
  • Free-hand rolled sushi

Chinese menu (Apr, Aug, Dec)
  • Cong You Bing - Spring Onion Pancakes 
  • Gua Bao - Steamed pork buns with caramelised pork belly and quick pickles

Cancellation policy:
  •  This is online class so you will get access to the class as soon as you sign up - we will send you recipes, videos and Zoom details. No cancellation but you can change the date.
  •  If you miss the webinar session you can catch up on our Facebook page or Zoom videos.
  •  If you buy the voucher from the 3rd party you will be bound by the terms.

Please note: If you are bringing a support worker to the class with you, they will also need a paid ticket for the class.



Knowledge required

Perfect for beginners. We recommend this program for children 10 years old or older.

What to bring
  • You are welcome to BYO your own wine and beer. However for safety, please focus on cooking and you can drink with the meal later. 
  • We recommend for you to measure and put all the ingredients on a dish/tray to be ready to cook.
  • We recommend comfortable clothing and closed-toed shoes. It’s a great idea to tie your hair back if it’s long too.
  • An ingredients list will be sent to you upon booking. The ingredients for this class are estimated to cost around $20 to $30. However, you may already have some of these ingredients at home and the cost may differ depending on where you buy the ingredients. We encourage you to go out and explore your local Asian shops and supermarkets. You will also likely have leftover ingredients to use in the future.

Suitable for

This Live streaming class is a great indoor activity idea for individuals and couples as well as for virtual team building activities at home.

Suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 10 years old). An adult must accompany any attending kids. The adult may observe at the class for free.

Otao kitchen is a cooking school and event space with a mission for people to come together to cook, connect, celebrate. We believe cooking and eating should be an experience, not just a meal. We created Otao kitchen as an extension of our passions to cook, share and inspire.

EXPERT IN COOKING CLASSES

Otao kitchen was launched in Melbourne, Australia in July 2014, with the goal of celebrating the rich and varied cooking experiences of Melbourne’s immigrant multicultural communities. Its founder, Chef Ha Nguyen, originally from Hanoi shares his passion for food, instructing customers in the exotic diaspora of Asian and around the world cuisine.

Today our guests can get inspired by cooking with our local and international chefs, listen to their cooking and travel experiences in Asia and around the world and bring some cooking and cultural tips and tricks home. With the nods at the diversity of communities within Melbourne, Otao kitchen features an array of global food experiences from Indian to Japan to Mexico and more.

In 2020 with the challenge of global Covid 19 pandemic, we set out to capture the curriculum of our hands-cooking classes and deliver it online to home cooks in Australia and across the world to guide you to cooking success and better health.
