Always a great event when you can talk directly to the manufacturer. Marco is very informative. I learnt that every headstock and every tailstock are a one off-no mixing and matching allowed. Great to know.
VicMarcs are extremely well engineered.
Cheers John Donnelly

Well done Dan! Great session. Excellent process of showing us how, doing it with us and then letting us do it for ourselves.
I’d highly recommend this workshop for all.
Thanks again

Woodturning Class: Intro to Pen Turning - Marrickville review by Nic Bishara - Sydney

Tony Mangioni Attended Aug 2026

I’ve just officially kicked off my woodturning journey, starting with a course on crafting pens from Australian timber.
The structure was spot on: David demonstrated each step first, then let us loose on the lathes under his watchful eye. Whenever a step was critical—or potentially project-ruining—he made sure to repeat it a couple of times, which my nervous hands deeply appreciated.
The vibe was super relaxed, shared with a small group of folks from all walks of life, all united by a sudden, intense desire to make sharp tools turn wood into shiny cylinders. By the end of the day, we didn't just leave with shiny new pens; we actually walked away with the confidence and know-how to keep going on our own.
David was an absolute gem of an instructor. Learning the craft from a master who has made over 25, 000 pens is equal parts inspiring and intimidating—mostly because it means he’s made 24, 999 more mistakes than I have, and survived them all! It was a fantastic day, and I'm officially hooked.

Vicmarc introduction and Q&A
Lots of great information from Chris and Marco, everyone a gem.
Both Marco and Chris were hungry for our questions and spent time answering and giving us ideas and machine setup and maintenance tips
The attendees I believe got a great deal in short space of time in a friendly and open atmosphere
Chris and Marco’s way of providing loads of useful advice on such a great Australian product

Great session. Thanks for your time Marco. No question too obscure, too technical or obtuse. All answered in a manner straightforward, friendly. A great opportunity to share information. David did an excellent job of directing traffic. This session was a real ‘value add’ from Timberbits.

a great chance to ask those things about a lathe that you've been wondering about & how the delivery guy is going to manage your lathe down the steep driveway!

Excellent information session, all my questions answered…..plus information from questions by others. I was also able to see potential future purchases (lathes, chucks etc). The presenters were most helpful.

I sent my husband to this and he absolutely LOVED it, special shout out to the teacher, he said he was the best!

Stephanie Flinn Attended Jun 2026

A great course. Taken slowly so easy to keep up without pressure. Learning new skills to take home to use on other projects is a benefit of the course, in addition to the boxes made over the two days. Eliza is a very knowledgeable teacher.

Woodworking machinery is something that I find a bit scary because of the powerful machines. This course was a great way to familiazire with these machines and learn how to operate them safely.
The course has a great progression from simple projects, cutting boards to more evolved pieces like the knife block and the saw horse.
Flynn, our instructor, encourages us to work independently after the initial induction on the machines, I really loved this aspect.
The classes finished last week and I miss it already, I want more.

I really enjoyed today's "learn the art of Kumiko", everything was really well set up to get us started.
There are some tricky things to master when doing Kumiko work, and with what I learnt today feel confidant to take on a more involved project.

Jennifer Taylor Attended Jun 2026

Enjoyable first experience of Kumiko. Great instructors who helped without doing it for you, managed well with students who were different abilities and speed. Atmosphere was positive and encouraging. Good to learn skills that I think I will be able to continue with and develop on my own.

Like any class it always come down to the teacher. I attended with the main objective to rectify the bad habits I had picked up along the way and Simon addressed them all, discretely and professionally. I thoroughly enjoyed the two days.
BTW, the bowls came up a treat too.

Great course, harder than I thought it would be so I learnt a lot! Both instructors were very knowledgeable and helpful despite the class being a bit bigger than expected. The tools and equipment are first class. Very happy with the completed piece and the skills i learned.

Eliza & Nick were awesome. I love their teaching style and overseeing our work as it progressed. I had lots of questions….! And I wasn’t made to feel stupid but got the clear explanation I needed till ‘I got it’.
I’ve ended up with a stool that I will treasure and hope to try another one soon.
Something else I loved was that all the tools were sharp and in good working order which gave us the best chance to succeed

An enjoyable experience with participants from all over Australia. Learnt a wonderful skill at an easy-going pace with a very patient instructor, Simon Pegg, who constantly kept an eye over everyone's progress and always delivered helpful advice in a really timely manner. I was able to produce twelve pretty impressive finished pieces despite zero prior experience. It was fun and very satisfying!

Five Day Woodturning Course review by Jackie Wilson - Sydney

Nic Bax Attended Apr 2026

An excellent 5-day wood-turning had us carving wooden bowls like skiers carving up the piste. Wet wood/dry wood, round bowls//square bowls, thick walls/(very) thin walls we carved it all. And very capably led by our highly expert and enthusiastic instructor, Simon Begg. Highly recommended if you want to finally realise a dream. You will also walk with enough interesting bowls to persuade even the most recalcitrant partner to find your lathe a place at home.

Martin Stanley Attended Apr 2026

Great class, great and patient teachers with a tremendous amount of knowledge. Made a few boxes with good quality handtools in a clean, streamlined and tidy workshop. Took away a lot of learnings from this. Will come back to learn more.

Michelle Laud Attended Mar 2026

The teaches were great very helpful. I made 2 boxes. Due to a flat battery I was an hour late to the last class so didnt quite finish t 2nd box but got it to the stage that I could easly finish it at home, this was my fault not the fault of the lenght of the course or the teachers. I enjoyed learning about the grain of the wood and the techniques to make the box strong. I really enjoyed making the second box as the first box I choose wood that was really hard to work learning that the choice of wood is important.

Rebecca Abdou Attended Mar 2026

Exactly what you need for a beginners class. The location and equipment is amazing. Darren did a great job of explaining, re-explaining and clarifying. Was a great atmosphere with everyone invested in their work. Would do again!

David Holland Attended Feb 2026

This was a good course overall which provided participants with an introduction to wood working. It involved use of both hand tools and electrical tools with good regard for safety. There were four projects - all coming with varying degrees of difficulty. There were six in the class who all got on well, which was a good number enabling Flynn to spend appropriate time with each. Flynn was positive and polite, good with praise and criticism, and clearly knows his woodworking. One positive - there was good discussion throughout the course regarding what we do following the conclusion of the course. Some have enrolled in other courses, some are planning to buy tools/electricals and set up their own sheds etc. Overall this was a great course.

The chessboard marquetry course was a christmas present from my SO. David and Eliza were the teachers and they were excellent at what they did, very knowledgeable and present. The course was very well laid out with clear instruction. Ive never done marquetry before but I was able to leave the class with a project I was really proud of and will be able to apply the skills I learnt here to future products. 10/10

James Murphy Attended Mar 2026

Great instructors and an easy going and welcoming dynamic. I was very impressed with how ot turned out. I do feel the class neds a little more time or some guidance on how much sanding is enough as its easy to go overboard. I was hoping we would also get to do the corner legs of the board but not sure if that os part of the course or due to tome constraint, but all the worth it regardless. Thanks David & Eliza!
