Fantastic course, learnt new skills and refined old ones. Simon is such a passionate and patient teacher.
Highly recommend any course run with Simon

Anthony Small May 2026

Like any class it always come down to the teacher. I attended with the main objective to rectify the bad habits I had picked up along the way and Simon addressed them all, discretely and professionally. I thoroughly enjoyed the two days.
BTW, the bowls came up a treat too.

Rodrigo Aburto May 2026

Another great course by the Wood Academy. David is a great teacher, very free with his knowledge. Excellent equipment and tools available, as always. This course shows great use of jigs on the table saw and bandsaw.

Great course, harder than I thought it would be so I learnt a lot! Both instructors were very knowledgeable and helpful despite the class being a bit bigger than expected. The tools and equipment are first class. Very happy with the completed piece and the skills i learned.

Woodworking Course: Dovetail Stools review by Andrew Leslie - Sydney

Amanda Roffey Apr 2026

Eliza & Nick were awesome. I love their teaching style and overseeing our work as it progressed. I had lots of questions….! And I wasn’t made to feel stupid but got the clear explanation I needed till ‘I got it’.
I’ve ended up with a stool that I will treasure and hope to try another one soon.
Something else I loved was that all the tools were sharp and in good working order which gave us the best chance to succeed

Dan Cherrie Apr 2026

Class was well run with two friendly and professional teachers who were well prepared and gave sufficient time to complete the project. The space is comfortable with access to everything required and highly recommend this course

Jackie Wilson Apr 2026

An enjoyable experience with participants from all over Australia. Learnt a wonderful skill at an easy-going pace with a very patient instructor, Simon Pegg, who constantly kept an eye over everyone's progress and always delivered helpful advice in a really timely manner. I was able to produce twelve pretty impressive finished pieces despite zero prior experience. It was fun and very satisfying!

Five Day Woodturning Course review by Jackie Wilson - Sydney

Nic Bax Apr 2026

An excellent 5-day wood-turning had us carving wooden bowls like skiers carving up the piste. Wet wood/dry wood, round bowls//square bowls, thick walls/(very) thin walls we carved it all. And very capably led by our highly expert and enthusiastic instructor, Simon Begg. Highly recommended if you want to finally realise a dream. You will also walk with enough interesting bowls to persuade even the most recalcitrant partner to find your lathe a place at home.

Martin Stanley Apr 2026

Teacher very well-organised. Pleasant, communicative, helpful, focused. Shaker Boxes. Each student completed three. What I liked most was how the workshop has enabled me to continue with this process

Helena Blackstock Apr 2026

Eliza was brilliant. The course was very enjoyable and I learnt so much. Thank you.

Sindre Bloch Apr 2026

Great class, great and patient teachers with a tremendous amount of knowledge. Made a few boxes with good quality handtools in a clean, streamlined and tidy workshop. Took away a lot of learnings from this. Will come back to learn more.

Michelle Laud Apr 2026

The teaches were great very helpful. I made 2 boxes. Due to a flat battery I was an hour late to the last class so didnt quite finish t 2nd box but got it to the stage that I could easly finish it at home, this was my fault not the fault of the lenght of the course or the teachers. I enjoyed learning about the grain of the wood and the techniques to make the box strong. I really enjoyed making the second box as the first box I choose wood that was really hard to work learning that the choice of wood is important.

Rebecca Abdou Mar 2026

Exactly what you need for a beginners class. The location and equipment is amazing. Darren did a great job of explaining, re-explaining and clarifying. Was a great atmosphere with everyone invested in their work. Would do again!

Woodcarving Class: Spoon Carving review by Rebecca Abdou - Sydney

David Holland Mar 2026

This was a good course overall which provided participants with an introduction to wood working. It involved use of both hand tools and electrical tools with good regard for safety. There were four projects - all coming with varying degrees of difficulty. There were six in the class who all got on well, which was a good number enabling Flynn to spend appropriate time with each. Flynn was positive and polite, good with praise and criticism, and clearly knows his woodworking. One positive - there was good discussion throughout the course regarding what we do following the conclusion of the course. Some have enrolled in other courses, some are planning to buy tools/electricals and set up their own sheds etc. Overall this was a great course.

Alex Phillips Mar 2026

The chessboard marquetry course was a christmas present from my SO. David and Eliza were the teachers and they were excellent at what they did, very knowledgeable and present. The course was very well laid out with clear instruction. Ive never done marquetry before but I was able to leave the class with a project I was really proud of and will be able to apply the skills I learnt here to future products. 10/10

James Murphy Mar 2026

Great instructors and an easy going and welcoming dynamic. I was very impressed with how ot turned out. I do feel the class neds a little more time or some guidance on how much sanding is enough as its easy to go overboard. I was hoping we would also get to do the corner legs of the board but not sure if that os part of the course or due to tome constraint, but all the worth it regardless. Thanks David & Eliza!

What a fantastic course well worth it. Easy to book. The 2 teachers were great. They explained everything to the whole class of 10. All the hand tools were in near new condition, clean and tidy workshop. Plenty of time to make 2 boxes in 4 weeks. Different woods to choose, different finishes (oils). Up to you. Teachers are there all the time walking around helping. If you are reading this don’t wait book now. I’m going onto the second course which is using the machines. Highly recommended and well priced course

Great, well structured course that taught the use of various hand tools to create a mitred box where you also had some design input.
The venue was set up well with plenty of workroom for the students with Eliza giving valued insights into the whys of the processes.
fantastic and would recommend to anyone wanting to experience the art

Every thing I expected.
Simon is a great resource.
Blah blah blah blah

Mark Weismantel Feb 2026

Ive been interested in wood turning for many years and went into the class thinking I would like to turn wood and left knowing i had to turn wood. I found the class perfect, Simon our teacher fantastic and the facility and equipment faultless. I was lucky enough to do this course with my daughter and we both had a ball.
The best present I have ever been given and for a total novice, the 2 days gave me exactly what i needed to get my new hobby started.
If you are interested in wood turning, this course will get you hooked.

Adam Moore Dec 2025

Fantastic class, wonderfully taught by Flynn. Flynn gave terrific instructions and allowed everyone to work at their own pace with oversight allowing our confidence to grow as we became familiar with the machines. Highly recommend the course for anyone interested in wood working or anyone looking to try something different. Loved all the projects we completed and the flexibility we were given.

Even though I only got to stay a couple of hours because a family member had a medical emergency.
I learnt an incredible amount in a short time. I have taken those skills and have made my own spoons at home. Thank you.

Lars Oleson Nov 2025

Very fun and thorough intro to woodturning. Like many in the class, I had last worked on a lathe in school (30+ years ago) and have old hand-me-down lathe 'on a shelf'. I wanted the confidence to safely turn. I came away with confidence I can actually make some nice looking stuff. We practiced the applied skills in class and came home with some (actually nice looking) bowls and other projects.

David Brewster Nov 2025

Simon was an excellent leader who gave clear guidance and direction. Day one gave me- a complete novice- the chance to learn new skills while making a wand and spinning top for my grandson!! Day two involved turning bowls. This was a very rewarding day and I managed to produce 2 bowls. All very satisfying

Nick Rowley Nov 2025

Simon was an excellent teacher and the two day course was truly excellent. If you want to learn the basics of woodturning and creat something lasting and beautiful then this is the course for you.

Nic Bax Nov 2025

Great atmosphere and although class was full, we all had our own lathe and with two highly experienced woodturner teachers we were never far away from advice and new ideas.

Sarah Sternau Nov 2025

Great class! The classroom space is fantastic, with a wide range of tools and equipment, and Simon was very generous in sharing his vast knowledge. Over the course of five days, I went from never having used a lathe to using a variety of tools to turn bowls, spindles, and delicate finials. In addition to just showing us how to safely and effectively use the equipment, Simon also shared info on sourcing wood, the market for wooden art, and different artists' techniques and work.
