Glass Blowing Taster Session

2 hours Class size 1 to 5 label $120 - $180 ($180 per guest when you book for 1 guest, $140 for 2 guests, $120 for 3+ guests)

Your teacher, Mark Eliott is COVID-19 aware

This means that this teacher won't run a class if they've had flu symptoms in the last 14 days, and will adhere to relevant state restrictions (e.g. on maximum number of students per class)

See additional precautions taken by your teacher

I will clean tools, glass and protective eyewear between classes with disinfectant or sanitised wipes while wearing rubber/plastic gloves so as to prevent any potential transmission.

Discover a fabulous new skill: blowing and sculpting glass in the flame. The class is taught by Glass Artist Mark Eliott. Mark will take you through the basics of glass blowing in this 2 hour introduction in his studio.

This 2 hour taster session will cover:

- The basics of glass blowing using a "oxygen-propane" torch
- Using both clear and coloured "borosilicate" glass rods and tubes (you'll learn various types at the workshop!)
- Techniques such as sculpting, joining, stretching, blowing, and colour mixing
- Safety Talk on using the glass blow torch

You are using both right and left parts of the brain in this creative process which combines planning with improvisation. Students will come on a creative adventure with glass flame-work which balances technique, structure and improvisation.

You will make at least one glass object that you can take home for your family and friends to admire, which could be a small glass animal, pendant or abstract creation; you might come away with several objects. These creations will be finished and ready for you to take home approximately 40 minutes after the end of the class.

Please note that if you Request a class with 4 or 5 participants, it may run slightly over 2 hours (e.g. 2.5 to 3 hours).

Knowledge Required
Suitable for ages 12+ only when accompanied by a responsible adult. Minimum unaccompanied age 16.
What you'll get
You will make two objects to take home that you can take home for your family and friends to admire. Whether that is a small glass animal, trees, flower or a small abstract creation, vessel or even wearable object.
What to bring
You must wear proper clothing - long sleeves and long pants from cotton or other non-flammable material. So no shorts or tees! Full covered shoes at all times and best to tie long hair back on the day. You may like to bring water and a snack.
A container (such as a shoebox) to take your finished piece home after the class.
Suitable for

This is a fun indoor activity, suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 12 years old). An adult must accompany any attending kids, and must pay for a separate ticket.

Mia Bridle • Jun 2020

Mark is a great teacher, who created a very pressure-free environment where we felt comfortable to learn, create and experiment with the art form, free from expectations. He gave us ample time to create on our own, as well as helpful instructions and kind feedback. We were surprised by how much we could learn and accomplish in such a short time, and we were happy to take home two pieces each.
We were provided with all the materials we needed, with many choices for colour of glass to use. The venue was a great creative space!
It was a private class with just the two of us, but we felt comfortable and encouraged with Mark as our teacher.
The class was definitely great value for money and we can't recommend it enough!

A really enjoyable and fascinating intro to glass work! Mark is really knowledgeable and patient, and his love of introducing others to working with glass really shines through in his teaching. He demonstrates what you can do with the glass and then gives you free rein to play around and manipulate the glass into strange and fantastic shapes, with a huge amount of different sized rods and colours to choose from. Two hours flew by, and we're already thinking about when we can go back.

This course has been an absolute joy and I would definitely go for the 7 hour course next. Mark was super friendly , Informative and attentive instructor. The venue was somewhat straight forward to find and the waiting area was extremely comfy. There was someone playing the piano in a neighboring studio which made the experience at least 10% better as well as milk tea :) . This course was definitely worth the money considering I had a 1 on 1 for two hours with someone as experienced as Mark. During the class , I learned the fundamentals of glass work safety , glass lamp working and glass blowing. I made a two weird looking pieces but not too bad for 2 hours of learning.

It was our first time and Mark was an awesome teacher, explaining and showing us how to experiment with the glass, how to blow different shapes and taking us through the process of making a small pendant/hanging ornament. It was a fun morning getting to try something new and would recommend it to anyone interested in learning how glass art is made!

The venue was a bit hard to locate (allow a few minutes extra to get from the door to the studio), but once inside it was amazing. Mark was a great instructor, and the experience was wonderful. Thanks!

Lisa Wallis • Jun 2019

Mark was great. Cleary passionate and knowledgeable. Great introduction, great venue, great materials. Really enjoyed it.

Nikki Greener • Jun 2019

We booked a private lesson as a 60th birthday present. All 4 of us, different age groups (from 30s-60s) had a wonderful time. We each took home over 4 pieces that we had made.
The class was fun but also informative.
After our lesson we had lunch then came back 45mins later to collect our pieces.
The venue was only 5mins from the train station and very easy to find.

Glassblowing and Mosaic workshop review by Nikki Greener

Jennifer Lun • Jun 2019

Mark was lovely. We had fun playing with glass (and making some abstract objects) as well as learning how to glass blow. It was a birthday present and we all enjoyed it, would definitely recommend.

Yuka Mochizuki • May 2019

Lesson was super fun, really get to see glass in a new form - an artistic way. Mark was knowledgable and experienced, encouraged creativity. I got to create 3 glass pieces and took them home. Allow maybe 30 minutes after class since they need to be in the oven for while before taking it out! The venue is a little odd, since the doors are locked, but if you stand outside of the building near the door someone should come to you!

Glass Blowing Taster Session review by Yuka Mochizuki
Would we be able to make an hour glass or is that too difficult? Also, I was wondering if we were able to record a few short videos of each other making the piece, or is that not allowed?

In a 2 hour Taster session, we would usually do an improvisational solid glass form then an improvisational blown glass form using colour and clear glass. Then we would do a basic planned project such as a pendant or a turtle.

An hour glass could be done if I gave you a lot of help as this is a more sophisticated project.
You are welcome to video it.

Can my daughter participate? She is 14 and very level headed.

The minimum age for this class is usually 12 and your daughter sounds quite responsible so she should be fine
