Glass Blowing Taster Session

2 hours Class size 1 to 5

label $130 - $190 ($190 per guest when you book for 1 guest, $160 for 2 guests, $150 for 3 guests, $140 for 4 guests, $130 for 5 guests)

Discover a fabulous new skill: blowing and sculpting glass in the flame. The class is taught by Glass Artist Mark Eliott. Mark will take you through the basics of glass blowing in this two-hour introduction in his studio.

This two-hour taster session will cover:

  • The basics of glass blowing using a "oxygen-propane" torch
  • Using both clear and coloured "borosilicate" glass rods and tubes (you'll learn various types at the workshop!)
  • Techniques such as sculpting, joining, stretching, blowing, and colour mixing
  • Safety talk on using the glass blow torch

You are using both right and left parts of the brain in this creative process which combines planning with improvisation. Students will come on a creative adventure with glass flame-work which balances technique, structure and improvisation.

You will make at least one glass object that you can take home for your family and friends to admire, which could be a small glass animal, pendant or abstract creation; you might come away with several objects. These creations will be finished and ready for you to take home approximately 40 minutes after the end of the class.

Please note:
  • Bookings are unavailable for the first weekend of every month.
  • If you request a class with four or five participants, it may run slightly over two hours (e.g. two-and-a-half to three-hours).

Knowledge Required
Suitable for ages 12+ only when accompanied by a responsible adult. Minimum unaccompanied age 16.

What you'll get
You will make two objects to take home that you can take home for your family and friends to admire. Whether that is a small glass animal, trees, flower or a small abstract creation, vessel or even wearable object.

What to bring
You must wear proper clothing - long sleeves and long pants from cotton or other non-flammable material. So no shorts or tees! Full covered shoes at all times and best to tie long hair back on the day. You may like to bring water and a snack.
A container (such as a shoebox) to take your finished piece home after the class.

Fantastic taster session that has instilled in my husband and me an urge to return and do more. Mark is a great teacher with a masterful ability and the wisdom to know when to leave us to meddle or step in and rescue. Can’t wait to return

Took my girlfriend here for a surprise birthday gift and she was super ecstatic about both the learning process and outcome of our pieces . Our instructor Mark, was super knowledgeable, patient, and encouraged our creativity throughout the process . I encourage anyone who’s looking to bond more with their mate and get the creative juices flowing to come out and see Mark and do a bit of glass blowing !

Adam Murray  •  Mar 2021

We immensely enjoyed our glass blowing taster session. Mark prioritised our safety, patiently explained and demonstrated techniques, and gave us plenty of time to "get our own hands dirty". He answered all our questions, encouraged our "abstract" ideas, and was a pleasure to spend time with. Also just had a really good time creating with fire and glass. Plus, we love our finished products -- two little bud vases. Would highly recommend the class.

Mark is such a great teacher. He teaches in a very articulated artistic but practical and thorough way. Materials and tools are cleaned between sessions, he also provided some fizzy water to help us stay hydrated during a hot day. We have learnt a lot during those 2 hours and ended with 2 of our own glass creations at the end of the class. If you are interested and curious about glass blowing and flame working, I highly recommend taking the class.

This class was absolutely amazing! Mark is a knowledgeable, passionate and patient teacher who will make sure you not only make something you are proud of, but also appreciate the art of glass blowing.

Additionally, he is also an amazing artist with some amazing works in his studio.

We were amazed at how much we managed to do in two hours, but the time really flew and we were done before we knew it!

10/10 Highly Recommend!

Nicole Hallahan  •  Feb 2021

Really fun class, had a great time and Mark is very talented. Would have liked it to be maybe 30 min longer as it was quite difficult to attempt the two pieces/methods in the 2 hours, given that maybe half of that is already reserved for instruction & demonstration. Or perhaps the demo could be a bit shorter?

Laura Walker  •  Feb 2021

Awesome experience - glasswork is so fun, fluid and intuitive, but addictive!
I made a squid and a strange amoeba like thing, the glassblowing part of it was my favourite. Mark makes it look easy but it's quite tricky. In the best way.

This course has been an absolute joy and I would definitely go for the 7 hour course next. Mark was super friendly , Informative and attentive instructor. The venue was somewhat straight forward to find and the waiting area was extremely comfy. There was someone playing the piano in a neighboring studio which made the experience at least 10% better as well as milk tea :) . This course was definitely worth the money considering I had a 1 on 1 for two hours with someone as experienced as Mark. During the class , I learned the fundamentals of glass work safety , glass lamp working and glass blowing. I made a two weird looking pieces but not too bad for 2 hours of learning.

The venue was a bit hard to locate (allow a few minutes extra to get from the door to the studio), but once inside it was amazing. Mark was a great instructor, and the experience was wonderful. Thanks!

Mark was great. Cleary passionate and knowledgeable. Great introduction, great venue, great materials. Really enjoyed it.

We booked a private lesson as a 60th birthday present. All 4 of us, different age groups (from 30s-60s) had a wonderful time. We each took home over 4 pieces that we had made.
The class was fun but also informative.
After our lesson we had lunch then came back 45mins later to collect our pieces.
The venue was only 5mins from the train station and very easy to find.

Mark was lovely. We had fun playing with glass (and making some abstract objects) as well as learning how to glass blow. It was a birthday present and we all enjoyed it, would definitely recommend.

Lesson was super fun, really get to see glass in a new form - an artistic way. Mark was knowledgable and experienced, encouraged creativity. I got to create 3 glass pieces and took them home. Allow maybe 30 minutes after class since they need to be in the oven for while before taking it out! The venue is a little odd, since the doors are locked, but if you stand outside of the building near the door someone should come to you!

Glass Blowing Taster Session review by Yuka Mochizuki
FAQ
Would we be able to make an hour glass or is that too difficult? Also, I was wondering if we were able to record a few short videos of each other making the piece, or is that not allowed?
Sam

In a 2 hour Taster session, we would usually do an improvisational solid glass form then an improvisational blown glass form using colour and clear glass. Then we would do a basic planned project such as a pendant or a turtle.

An hour glass could be done if I gave you a lot of help as this is a more sophisticated project.
You are welcome to video it.

Can my daughter participate? She is 14 and very level headed.
Sam

The minimum age for this class is usually 12 and your daughter sounds quite responsible so she should be fine
