In this taster class, you will learn simple hand building techniques, including pinch pot making and slab building.

You will use your new skills and stoneware clay to make two handbuilt pieces, such as a planter, a bowl, a plate, a cup, a soap dish or perhaps a little vase.

Emma will take your finished pieces, dry them, bisque fire them, glaze them, fire them again, sand them, and then post them back to you all ready to enjoy in your home. This process takes up to 4 weeks after the workshop.

Your class fee includes the posting back of your work to you, and a drink and grazing platter to enjoy while you make.

Emma is an emerging ceramic artist from Canberra, creating jewellery and homewares.

Emma trained in Silversmithing at the Canberra School of Art in 1999 before transitioning to a career in counselling and community education, working with young people experiencing barriers to participating fully in education and employment.

Emma kept up an art practice on the side as a hobby, including studying to be an Ikebana teacher (Japanese art of creating botanical arrangements). While on maternity leave in 2008 she enrolled in a pottery class at her local arts centre. It was love at first sight of clay, and since then Emma has been building up her ceramic skills before launching 'The Seasonal Ceramicist' label in 2018. Emma now works part-time in education policy and part-time running 'The Seasonal Ceramicist'.

Emma is passionate about sharing the fun of clay with other people. 'The Seasonal Ceramicist' offers workshops in decorating porcelain and handbuilding your own homewares, as well as classes in Ikebana.

Had a great time working with two types of clay. There was enough direction to make sure we had the basic techniques but enough space for our own ideas and creativity. Wasn’t a set vessel which had to be made, and enough time was given to come up with our own master pieces. Emma our instructor was brilliant and made everyone feel welcome and supported. Would recommend as a great gift! Thanks

Emma was absolutely delightful, she was a fantastic teacher, very encouraging and kind.
The venue was lovely, lots of food and lots of resources.
We made a variety of different clay objects; milk jug, spoon, bowl, vase with two different types of clay.
It was such a fun day and we had a blast and learnt so much about clay.
Would do it again in a heartbeat!
