What is Japanese Mizuhiki art?
Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese paper cord used originally for special occasions, such as engagement gifts from the groom's family to the bride's family, and for gift money envelopes. Yes, they are made of paper. The core of Mizuhiki cord is twisted paper and then dyed or wrapped with coloured thread, then knotted into shapes. It is also used to tie a Samurai’s and Sumo wrestler’s top knot! Today we use it for making jewellery and other beautiful objects.
I moved from Canberra to Perth in January 2023, and now my new art activities will be refreshed and am seeking further goals to share with more people. "Tie the knots" I also sell items from my Etsy store under the name happyJPdesigns.

What a lovely way to spend my Sunday afternoon. Az was very patient with me as I played with my paper cords and I have some beautiful earrings at the end of our time together along with instructions emailed to me to help make another pair later. I am so grateful to the teachers who still ZOOM - especially with natural teachers like Az being in Canberra while I am in Sydney. Thank you for a special time together - I feel confident to continue.

This is a great class. In 2 hours I learnt to make some absolutely beautiful earrings. Az is a warm and friendly teacher who really knows the subject. Her instructions were clear and the how-to videos she provided are excellent.
I highly recommend this class.

I learnt three different Japanese folds and two types of knots. Special paper was provided along with two sets of chop sticks for the main table setting. Sample knots were also provided. The teacher, Az, is very both very knowledgeable and patient. She is able to demonstrate the techniques online so that you can understand and do them yourself.

Az, our instructor was just great. She was very patient with us as we learnt how to make earrings. It was such a fun afternoon celebrating our girlfriends 50th birthday. Everything was great. All the color selection made for some beautiful earrings. Thank you Az for all you did.

I really enjoyed this class. Az was a great teacher - very clear with her instructions and patient as I struggled with my two left thumbs! The earrings we made were fantastic and there were enough cords left after the class to make more. Definitely recommend this class.

A truly great class! Made two different styles of earring made in two hours. The teacher, Az, was brilliant. We logged in on two different devices so that we could follow what she was doing and she could see what we were doing with our hands. Az was extremely patient and any potential for mistakes was corrected immediately. She started off simply and built up gradually so that we could understand the new concepts and put them together to successfully make our earrings.

The class was really interesting and fun! The teacher was amazing, very patient and competent and stayed over the time limit to make sure I got everything right. I will definitely recommend this class to anyone that is interested in Japanese culture. I loved it! Thanks a lot

What a lovely way to spend a Friday morning! Az introduced the craft and traditional use of mizuhiki. We practiced different weaves and made 2 sets of earrings. Az was a warm and patient teacher. All materials came ahead of the workshop in a lovely envelope. The information provided before and after the experience was very useful. I highly recommend taking a class and connecting with happyjpdesigns on IG and Etsy.

This was an online class, cos that is our only option right now, due to lockdowns. It suited me cos I am geographically distant from the teacher.
Az really knows her stuff here, and she was able to help me create some beautiful mizuhiki knots. Her setup with two cameras made watching her hands easy too.
I was pleasantly surprised at how well I did.
I think the course was excellent value for money.
I look forward to practising
