What you'll do
Join local artist Linda Newton in this full-day drawing class where you learn to outline your sketches before using watercolour pigments to fill them with colour!
Linda is known for her quirky yet incredibly detailed paintings and drawings and in this intensive workshop, she will show you how she creates her birds and dogs including how she creates movement in her characters and develops personalities.
You will then be guided in how you can add dimension and drama in your composition by adding a watercolour wash to your work. Linda will go over the basics of using watercolours and the effects that can be achieved with a variety of brushes and the finishes that can be achieved with different techniques.
Each participant will be provided with a kit to use during the workshop and take with them to continue their artistic journey at home. Your kit is valued at more than $70 and will include:
- Kuretake Watercolour Set - incl. 12 high pigment paints
- Zig Kuretake waterproof black fineliner
- 3 x Watercolour Brushes
- A4 Watercolour Pad
A delicious lunch will be provided created from all local organic produce and able to cater for any dietary requirements you may have. We also provide you with a divine afternoon treat and tea and coffee facilities are available throughout the course.

Sessions at The Old Auction House require a minimum of four participants to run. In the event that we do not have sufficient students we will cancel the class and contact you a minimum of 24 hrs prior to the session to organise a full refund or transfer to another date.

Linda Newton is a Central Victorian artist who creates spontaneous nature-inspired artworks often featuring birds and other native animals each with character that lifts off the page. Her own relaxed style carries over into her teaching meaning that classes with Linda are tailored to the skills and interests of the participants on the day.
A belief that art can be accessible to all shapes Linda's teaching style, and a warm and inviting classroom environment can be expected by all participants.
Linda's work can be seen on display in her Castlemaine studio, Studio MA56.

The Old Auction House is an independently run multi-use arts precinct located in the regional Victorian town of Kyneton, just an hour north of Melbourne. Housed in a historic weatherboard building, which served as the much loved Ferris auction rooms for over 80 years, the precinct opened in April 2017 and is home to a variety of artistic spaces.
The Old Auction House is currently home to a retail shop specialising in quality Australian handmade items, four working artist studios including local glass artists Leadlight By Ettore, a teaching space for visiting artists, and two gallery spaces with rotating exhibitions.
The Old Auction House is open 7 days and the entire space has been renovated to be accessible for those with prams, wheelchairs, and mobility issues.
The Old Auction House has a focus on community engagement in the arts. Each studio runs a variety of classes with different artists and materials throughout the year.

The 5-hour workshop with Linda went by so fast. Linda was a wonderful teacher who imparted her wealth of knowledge and experience in organized bite-size pieces. She had wonderful attention to detail when mentoring each student. I joined the class to learn more about painting with watercolor, l wasn't disappointed, l came away from the class with much more clarity and learned many new techniques through Linda's amazing teaching. The whole workshop was well organized and the lunch was delicious. I will be definitely booking into more classes in the future. Thank you Linda for a truly wonderful experience.

Our teacher Linda Newton was wonderful, extremely patient, had plenty of tips & tricks to share with us, explained everything in detail but in an easy & straightforward way. The materials provided were excellent, & we got to keep them to take home & continue working on becoming better artists. I believe the experience was good value for money as Linda has years of experience & talent. Linda also has the unique ability to show & guide you in the right direction & as I was an absolute beginner with watercolors & very nervous she gently encouraged me & gave me pointers on where I needed to work on (which you cannot get from reading a book). I learnt that nothing can really go wrong & if you are learning it's all good, it's really about having fun & learning something new. I'm most definitely going home & will be practicing my artwork & watercolors to get better at it. It was also great to see other participants' artwork which had been made in the workspace. A really lovely day from start to finish. Teacher was knowledgable and fun, materials were excellent and subjects were fun. We maybe tried to do too much so I didn’t leave with a finished piece, but will most definitely be using the take home set to push on. Great atmosphere and a lovely lunch too. Loved it :)

I thoroughly enjoyed the ink and watercolour class, learning lots of new skills, in all aspects of these media and pencil work, too.
Linda was a superb teacher, putting everyone at ease and giving lots of individual help, along with the general class teaching.
(I can’t wait to put it all into action, to produce my first masterpiece!)

Teacher was energetic and very helpful. Catered for both the experienced and the experimental.
Being the latter I learnt lots about watercolour paints and how to use that medium with black pen. We learnt the art of using graphite pencils and technique to master the black outline pen. So much in one day! Really enjoyed it… thank you Linda and the old auction house team.
