Interested in learning more about Japanese culture? Discover how to make Japanese paper cord knots using the art of Mizuhiki and create beautiful table settings with Az from Happy JP Designs!

This online class is part of the virtual Japanaroo event and so will be offered at a special discounted rate. Please note that the class dates can not be cancelled nor changed.

Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese art, using a Mizuhiki paper cord. Yes, they are made of paper! The core of the Mizuhiki cord is twisted paper and then dyed or wrapped with coloured thread, then knotted into shapes.

This technique has been used for centuries for gift wrapping decorations including gorgeous engagement gifts from the groom's family to the bride's family, and for gift money envelopes. It is even used to tie a Samurai’s and Sumo wrestler’s top knot!

In this fun online class, you'll learn how to tie basic knots and paper folding that will transform a simple Mizuhiki cord into beautifully shaped objects which you can use as table decorations, including chopstick covers.

Az will also demonstrate how the Mizuhiki cord is used to produce gift wrappings and cards for special occasions. Unlike a ribbon or bow, it is not just a decoration but a seal for the gift which represents a bond between the giver and the receiver. So they are also perfect gift ideas for weddings, paper anniversaries (first wedding anniversary) and to give to close friends.

Come along and make a beautiful table setting for a special occasion with us!

Hi, I'm Az. I'm an Interior Designer and a Japanese Mizuhiki artist.

What is Japanese Mizuhiki art?

Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese paper cord used originally for special occasions, such as engagement gifts from the groom's family to the bride's family, and for gift money envelopes. Yes, they are made of paper. The core of Mizuhiki cord is twisted paper and then dyed or wrapped with coloured thread, then knotted into shapes. It is also used to tie a Samurai’s and Sumo wrestler’s top knot! Today we use it for making jewellery and other beautiful objects.

I am a member of Trove Canberra, a collective of Canberra-based artists, and sell my jewellery through their Dickson Shop. I also sell items from my Etsy store under the name happyJPdesigns.
