Jewellery Making Class: Make a Ring in a Day

Design and create your own sterling silver ring in just one day!

6 hours Class size 3 to 6     label $250

Try something new at this unique workshop in Wollongong and take home your own beautiful sterling silver ring! Led by Meg from Ahoy Birdy, you will learn how to design and create a special piece of jewellery in just one day.

You will be shown how to use professional jewellers tools and traditional silversmithing techniques to design, anneal, size and solder your ring.

What you'll learn:

  • Saw-piercing: using a jewellers frame and saw-blade, you’ll learn how to saw-pierce metal to cut out the design and shape of your ring.
  • Soldering: using a professional torch you’ll learn the technique needed to establish the correct flame to join the ring band.
  • Finishing: you’ll learn finishing techniques like stamping, hammer texturing, polishing and adding a patina.

Absolute beginners are welcome to try out this fun indoor activity for the first time in our casual and friendly environment.

Knowledge required
The workshop is open to beginners and anyone wanting to learn the basics of making sterling silver jewellery, no experience is necessary.
What you'll get
All of the tools and consumables needed are supplied. You'll take home a copper ring you tested your skills and techniques on and a sterling silver ring designed and created by you!
What to bring
  • Please wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, long sleeves (preferred) and tie any long hair back. Please take off any dangly jewellery prior to the class.
  • A notepad and pen.
  • Lunch.
  • An apron if you have one.

Meg has been silversmithing since 2012.

In 2018 she completed a three-year Jewellery Manufacturing Certificate at The Design Centre Enmore in Sydney, where she was awarded ‘The Gold & Silversmiths Guild of Australia Award, in recognition of Exceptional Hand Skills’.

Meg began teaching silver smithing workshops at the Sydney Community College in 2016 including:

  • Making a Cabochon Set Ring

Meg continues to produce jewellery and teach what she loves to others looking to improve their skills in traditional silversmithing techniques.
