Kintsugi Australia

Knowledge of Kinstugi from 5 masters

5.0 (481)

Kintsugi Australia is located in Sydney and the only organisation in Australia completely specialised in kintsugi, offering private and group lessons, repair and kintsugi artistic creations. After completing the traditional course, the students can join the Kintsugi Dojo where they can continue to create their own work of art, and they can improve their technique to become kintsugi masters.

Kintsugi Dojo is available only in Sydney main studio, but online Dojo is starting in February 2021.

Beginner’s, Traditional and Kintsugi accessory courses are held in Melbourne nearly every month and occasionally in Brisbane.

Jun Morooka is a kintsugi master. He is an expert in the Traditional Kintsugi method with natural lacquer (urushi) and gold. He has also developed his own method using modern material, bringing innovation to an ancient technique. He accepts commissions to repair broken pottery and ceramics with kintsugi.

Jun Morooka was born in Tokyo in 1959. He moved to Sydney in 1987 and in 2008 he started to manage a Japanese restaurant called JIPANG. He fell in love with kintsugi after watching a TV documentary. He decided to go back to Japan to train with five kintsugi masters in Kanazawa and Tokyo. In 2018, he established Kintsugi Australia in Sydney.

Jun Morooka teaches Traditional Kintsugi and Modern Kintsugi in Sydney, Melbourne and Newcastle, he exhibited his artwork at the Sydney Adventist Hospital in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Department. "Kibou" and "Negai" were displayed in the hospital to show that scars can become beautiful.

In June 2020, "Jikuu" was selected as a finalist in the 2020 Northern Beaches Art Prize - Open Category. The artwork was selected among over 800 entries and was displayed during an online exhibition (31 July - 30 September 2020).

Jun Morooka has appeared on a number of media outlets, such as ABC News and SBS Australia. An audio interview is available on SBS Japanese Radio and a video interview on SBS Australia Facebook page. He was also featured on ELLE DECOR (Spain).

Jun Morooka was invited to give a kintsugi lesson during the TV Show The Bachelor Australia aired on Channel 10 on the 17th of September 2020.

The class was part educational and part entertaining. The teacher showed as many photos of past students and celebrities alike that took the kintsugi classes. There was a dedicated venue for the classes and the location was very central in the CBD, although parking maybe in an issue if driving. The class allows you to have a taste sample of what is involved in kintsugi without a lot of time commitment. This was such a wonderful experience - the teacher was so helpful and positive during my beginner attempts at this Japanese art form. I love the philosophy behind the technique - broken things are still beautiful and we need to embrace our scars. My end products (earrings and a brooch) look fabulous and I shall enjoy showing them off!

Beginner's Kintsugi Workshop

My partner and I had a great private class. Jun was an amazingly nice person and spoke to us about the history of Kintsugi too. Never felt rushed. Everything was explained well. Even got to have some green tea and Kit Kat. Very fun. Very cool!

Had the best time doing a modern kintsugi class with Jun-san. He is an amazing, patient and knowledgeable teacher. I went with 4 friend and we had so much fun learning the art of "golden repair". We were all very impressed with our beautiful repairs. Excited to test out our new skills. Thank you for time and efforts Jun and Hitomi.

Wonderful to repair an old family piece of ceramic using an ancient craft. I love the philosophy behind kintsugi. The class has a calm, gentle, focussed energy and the time just flies. I loved this class!

The class was great - my teacher was very knowledgable and personable, and obviously puts a lot of himself into what he does - I came away with some great skills and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening learning the art of traditional Japanese mending.

I would highly recommend taking time out of your busy life to spend a calm, creative and productive couple of hours with Jun and Hitomi. Jun did a great job explaining the technique and philosophy of Kintsugi. He was kind and patient and helpful. It was a lot more involved than we expected and we felt a huge sense of accomplishment at the end of the class. The tea break with Japanese snacks half way through was a pleasant surprise - thank you Hitomi.

Wonderful unique experience learning from a very capable, giving, professional and charming teacher who has studied with five Kintsugi Masters in Japan over the years. All the equipment was provided and all one had to do was just arrive and enjoy the very special tutorial. The location and teaching area worked extremely well too along with the unexpected kind hospitality of Japanese tea and treats midway through this lovely journey. Many thanks and I would be happy to recommend this course to anyone.

I have absolutely no craft skills but was intrigued by the technique. The instructor was charming and incredibly patient with me I was all thumb and awkward. That said, I left with a plate I love and am looking forward to showing friends. My sister who is quite crafty refuses to believe I did it ! Highly recommend.

One of the best workshops I've ever done! It was so well organised. Techniques were clearly explained and it all unfolded very logically. The materials were great, so were the explanatory notes. It was very satisfying to finish the project by end of the class and I know that I
