How to make kokedama, the perfect indoor plant

Learn how to make Japanese inspired moss balls from some of the best Kokedama teachers in Sydney.

Kokedama is a type of bonsai originated in Japan centuries ago and is made up of small plants living off a ball of soil and moss that is bound by string. Kokedamas make great indoor plants because they're super versatile and can be hung in small indoor spaces, placed in bowls and don't even need a pot.

In this workshop which is perfect for beginners, you will learn how to create three Kokedamas using petite succulents and seasonal plants. You will one small, one medium and one large Kokedama in the class - the perfect start to your Kokedama collection.

You'll leave this workshop with your moss balls, the know-how to make more at home, we well as a Merchant and Green care card and carry bag.

This class can also be customised to fit special events or occasions (where you're welcome to bring drinks and nibbles if you like), and we can also travel to your venue - just contact us. Group bookings 6-30 guests welcome.

Chris was fantastic & a really great teacher. The atmosphere of his shop & his friendly personality really set the mood for an enjoyable experience. With the assistance & guidance from Chris we crafted our own amazing works of art. The high quality of material that was provided for us to work with certainly made our Kokedamas look top notch. Enjoyed it so much I would go again.

I did the Kokedama workshop on the 21st September at Merchant and Green Florist. It was a reasonable group of six persons surrounded with beautiful flowers and plants. An enjoyable and full of fun afternoon. The teacher (Orla) showed us how to make the Kokedama. And she patiently guided everyone of us to the end of the class, and answer any questions promptly.
I brought home different sizes of Kokedama with succulents and maiden hair.

My mum and I went to the Kokedama class at Merchant and Green on Saturday and we had the best time! Orla was our teacher and she was so lovely and talented. Very patient. We left with three kokedama plants each, of varying sizes. One small succulent, one medium succulent and one large maiden-hair fern! I would recommend this class to everyone :)

It was definitely a wonderful experience. A member called me to check up on of whereabouts because we were running a little late by 10 minutes, so we are grateful for the wait. The teacher was patient and took the time to answer our questions and came by to help us.
The atmosphere was peaceful with customers coming in checking the classes and the store out.
Would recommend to anyone who wants to get an introduction into plants and not get there hands too dirty!

My Mum, daughter and I loved this class. The teacher was very informative and gave very good instruction. The venue was easy to get to and lots of parking in nearby streets. The class was good value for money, we all had 3 Kokedama to take home. I feel that it is something we could now do on our own.

I got this workshop as a gift for my hubby who loves gardening and was looking to learn more about kokedama. Chris was our teacher. He was friendly and warm and a good instructor. The tasks were sequenced well, in increasing difficulty and we felt confident with each new task. The materials we used were of great quality and we got to take home the kokedama we created. We had guests over the next day and they were super impressed with our creations!
We really recommend this class!

Today, I spent a very pleasant morning learning how to make Kokedama balls under the guidance of Chris (assisted by Orla). Chris, our friendly teacher made us feel welcome. His instructions were clear, he was patient, he provided assistance when needed and he was positive in his encouragement of our efforts. We ended the class having each made 3 respectable Kokedama balls and with enough knowledge to make more on our own. All up it was a fun workshop.

Enjoyed this workshop very much. The venue was beautiful and very conducive to working with plants, being surrounded by them and also beautiful flowers. The teacher was knowledgable and had a supportive, easy manner. Everyone in class achieved a great result and I was very happy with the three Kokodamas I bought home. The skills are something that I will be able to use again and again on my own, but we were given some insider hints that made the whole process much easier. It was a relaxed, but productive, way to spend a Saturday morning. A super successful workshop, thank you!

Great location (the florist is beautiful, loads of all day parking and a great cafe next door!), really friendly teachers, small class size.
