Learn Ikebana, the Japanese flower arrangement, in this live online ikebana aesthetics course! This course, Zoom Ikebana Dojo is also a great supplement for those who are studying ikebana now or for those who would like to teach ikebana effectively.

This live online course, which is beginner-friendly, focuses on show and tell, with feedback from the instructor.

CURRICULUM

Under our curriculum, you will move from basic freestyle arrangements to classic basic styles to advanced freestyle arrangements. This will help you achieve your goals quickly and is easy to follow.

The curriculum consists of three levels, each with 8 topics. In total our curriculum covers 24 topics. As we plan to run the session almost every fortnight, it takes 12months for you to complete this course.

Course 1 (Level 1): Four Ikebana Principles 1 & Four Ikebana Elements 1
8 sessions (January to April)

Course 2 (Level 2): Four Ikebana Principles 2 & Four Ikebana Elements 2
8 sessions (May to August)

Course 3 (Level 3): Line 3 & Form 3
8 sessions (September to December)

There are 3 intakes in one year (January, May & September). All welcome for level 1 &2. Level 3 is only for advanced students or for those who completed Level 1 & 2.

HOW TO PAY

Book the first session of a course for $120, and your package include 8 sessions in the course.


HOW TO USE

1. Do your home work based on our instructions.
Prepare all the materials and tools based on our advise (orientation page in Zoom Ikebana Dojo).
You can try to copy the sample ikebana arrangement in every detail (this is an effective traditional teaching method) but advanced students are encouraged to create their own freestyle works based on the same topic.

2. Send a photo of your work at least 24 hours before the session.

3. Join the Zoom session and receive feedback from our facilitators.

4. Adjust your work after the Zoom session.

5. Share your completed work on our Facebook page, Ikebana Gallery.

This course encourages you to continue practising your ikebana skills and provides plenty of tips, tricks and resources to help you along.


Knowledge required
Beginners welcome. Anyone can join regardless of ikebana school, stage of learning or country of residence.

Shoso Shimbo PhD is a certified teacher of Ikebana and has over 30 years experience in Ikebana. He studied under the late Sogetsu Head Master, Hiroshi Teshigahara.

Shoso was selected by Belle magazine as one of six “Australia’s top floral designers” and has won multiple awards including the Gold Award at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. His work was selected for the prestigious publication, International Floral Art 2014/2015 & 2016/2017, Stichting Kunstboek (Belgium).

His sculptural works have been featured in some of the major contemporary art exhibitions including the Toyota Sculpture Exhibition, Lorne Sculpture, Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Award Finalists Exhibition, Yering Station Sculpture Exhibition and the New Wave Art Festival at the NGV.

He won the Arnold Bloch Leiber Prize at the Yering Station Sculpture Exhibition 2017. His recent commissions include a public work of art for the Archibald Award Exhibition 2015 at the Art Gallery of Ballarat and the Wye River Project as part of the Lorne Sculpture 2016.

A common theme through many of his works is harmony with nature's organic order and the relationship between man and nature, where man is a part of the natural order rather than the owner of it.

Shoso has an MA in Japanese Studies, a Master of Fine Art and PhD in Education. He is also qualified as a garden designer (Japan Horticultural Society) specialising in Japanese gardens. He is a directer of International Society of Ikebana Studies and he teaches Japanese Aesthetics at RMIT Short Courses.
