What you'll do

Do you have many shirts with buttons that need to be stitched back on? Zips that need to be re-attached? Hemlines on trousers/jeans/skirts that need to be repaired?

In this live online class, we will be using clothing you already own, and with a bit of practice, you will be able to fix and upcycle almost anything!

For this class, you can use your clothing, hand-me-downs/ups/across, or just op-shop buys that need to be adjusted to fit better.

Your teacher will guide you on using visible mending and simple hand stitching to repair your clothing so they will have a new lease of life. Some of the methods you will learn are Boro Stitching (running stitch), slip stitching, patching, and reinforcing with fabric. We will also look at dyeing and over-dyeing as methods to upcycle clothing.

As well as all of the above, you will learn simple embroidery stitches to embellish your repairs to make the finished pieces unique.

You will also learn how to create hand-dyed fabric and use other bits of fabric when patching.
Your teacher will show you examples for inspiration and samples of what she has made, hand-dyed and remade herself.

This live-streaming class is available for scheduled and requested times. Your teacher can also run workshops in the Blue Mountains (please enquire).

Knowledge required

None - we will be starting hand sewing from scratch! Your teacher will supply stitch instructions that will be sent through as PDF files.

What you'll get in your craft kit

A repair kit includes thread (100% cotton), hand-dyed fabric, and 100% quilting cotton for patching.

Printed instructions for basic stitching
Suitable needles
Needle threader
Pair of Japanese thread snips
Packet of pins
small sprung embroidery hoop
list of sources for supplies
darning egg
soda ash for the dyeing session.

What you'll need

Clothes you would like to repair if possible. Buttons that need reattaching or ones to replace existing, as well as the thread you want to use. Feel free to have some snacks handy too!

Session repeats

After the first session, subsequent sessions can be arranged with the teacher, at a time that suits you.

Suitable for

Suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 14 years old).

An adult must be present whilst kid(s) engage with the box.

I love teaching and sharing what I know, helping people to stretch their skills, create new experiences & explore their own creativity.

I firmly believe there is no such thing as a non-creative person.
Everyone has the potential to be creative.
It could be in cooking, gardening, interior design, writing or as in my case - FIBRE arts.

As a teacher with 30 years experience, I get a real buzz when a student who hasn't tried a specific craft before - not only masters it, but becomes excited by the ways they can use their new skill.

I started in Jewellery design when I was in my early 20's, then discovered that all the things I love to do (design, dye, draw, felt, paint, etc) could be used in the practice of 'Hand or Surface Embroidery'.

I taught the 'Foundation course' in Colour & Design at the International School of Colour & Design.

I am a published textile designer & also run week-long textile experiences in Tasmania every January.
I have exhibited many of my pieces in a variety of spaces & had one piece auctioned off to raise money for the Embroiderers Guild of NSW.

My influences come from various parts of history both ancient and modern, the natural world (especially birds & fish) & the written word.
I love to read.
I collect folktales & poetry.
These interests often show up in my work - in quotes or images inspired by what I've read.

I bring all of these experiences & interests to my teaching of Hand Embroidery & encourage students to explore the potential of this ancient art form.

The same can be said of my other design practices - wirework, up-cycling clothing & free form crochet + knitting.
I also teach spinning - I dye & spin my own yarn.
