Did you know you have over 100 billion neurons that produce your thoughts, memories and actions? But what exactly is a “brainwave”? And is your head really full of electricity? How does your brain behave when you’re calm or when you are solving a maths problem?

Are you curious to see how your mind works?

Brainlight is a new technology that allows us to experience one of the most puzzling aspects of ourselves- our minds. It demonstrates the innovative use of augmented technologies custom programmed to show the inner workings of our brain in vibrant coloured light.

During this workshop, we’re strapping on an electroencephalographic headset and watching our thoughts come to life. Using Brainlight, an interactive artwork you control with your mind, we’ll be exploring the exciting world of neuroscience, creativity, data visualisation and the mysterious world of your brain!

Experience first hand how a non-invasive EEG (Electroencephalography) device works and then imagine other creative applications for bio-controlled devices in the future,  eg. mind controlled wheelchairs. Let’s see how the future might look if the fields of art, design, science and technology collide in unexpected ways!

Brainlight provides a unique educational and self discovery experience. This workshop “illuminates” how the brain works through interacting with the Brainlight technology and teaches students about neuroscience and mindfulness in a fun way that is relevant to all ages.

In this highly interactive workshop students will learn about:

* NEUROSCIENCE– what are brainwaves? How does the brain work? What are electrical impulses?
* EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE– learn about how the brain responds when you feel different emotions (stress, anger, excitement, calm) and learn how to gain control of them.
* MINDFULNESS– See what your brain looks like when you are calm and meditative and learn to retain that state.
* DATA VISUALISATION-  Learn about the new field of data visualisation see the electrical activity of the brain transmitted from a wireless EEG headset be transformed into light.
* NEW BRAIN COMPUTER INTERFACE TECHNOLOGIES (BCI): Experience first hand how a non-invasive EEG (Electroencephalography) devices work and what the possibilities are for these devices in the future,  eg. mind controlled wheelchairs
* HOW ART, DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY COLLIDE: Learn how these interdisciplinary fields can benefit each other and the importance of being multidisciplinary in the future.

This popular program is led by Brainight creator & multidisciplinary artist Laura Jade, who holds a masters in Lighting Design and degrees in Art, Biology & Science Communication as well as 10 years experience teaching creative workshops. The Brainlight has been demonstrated at major museums in Sydney and in institutions nationally and internationally.
