Make your own hand-stitched Coptic bound book

2 hours Class size 4 to 6 label $30 - $60 ($30 for Class only, no box, $60 for Class and box)

This is a ClassBento LiveBox class! From the comfort of your home, share an artisan experience with your friends, family or colleagues, or just enjoy with some like-minded others. As seen on The Guardian, TimeOut, Broadsheet, Concrete Playground, Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and more. Here's how it works:

  1. Book or Request your preferred time
  2. We'll deliver a ClassBento Box to you - this is a physical DIY craft box containing the materials you'll need. Shipping is free, and you'll get your box delivered in time for your class. We ship nationwide.
  3. Enjoy the online class. You'll receive a link to a Zoom meeting. On the day of the class, use that link to join the class. Class sizes are kept small, so you can easily ask questions and get immediate responses. Zoom is free and easy to use, on any device - smartphone, tablet or laptop. You're in control of your privacy - you can mute yourself and hide your webcam if and when you prefer.

Grab a buddy and a beverage (totally optional) and settle into a cozy Saturday afternoon, learning how to make your very own hand-stitched Coptic bound book!

Coptic binding is a quick and easy type of binding where the book lays completely flat when open. It also shows off the beautiful spine and colourful threads holding the signatures (page groupings) together.

In this live online class, you can choose whether you want to stitch in some paper paraphernalia - think; ticket stubs, photos (on paper), receipts, travel brochures etc. - or just create a plain journal for yourself or a loved one. Books make great gifts!

Join this two-hour class to learn what a signature is, how the heck to use a curved mattress needle, and some Coptic stitch tips and tricks. All will be revealed!

By the end of the class, you will be well on your way to finishing your A6 pocket-sized Coptic bound book.

Are you a paper hoarder? Do you collect ticket stubs, brochures, bits of pretty wrapping paper that you can't bare to throw away? Is it all piling up in a shoebox under your bed, like me?

I learnt how to bookbind at Glasgow School of Art 10 years ago, and since then have taught the odd workshop here and there - at Koskela in Rosebery, as part of Art & About Sydney and with Work-Shop in Redfern.

My day job is within the arts & cultural sector, in leadership development and capacity building. I love working with people, and have previously worked across festivals and galleries around the world, including the Tate in London.

These workshops have brought me so much joy during lockdown, so I thought it'd be fun to have a go at sharing my skills in bookbinding online for anyone interested in learning! I'd love to meet you, share a story and a beer, and get all those paper bits and bobs mentioned above consolidated into your very own hand-bound book.

I look forward to meeting you!

We had a couple of technology issues but the class still ran smoothly. It was great fun, interactive and Frances made sure we didn’t get lost along the way! Frances also got in touch with a text message prior to the class to make sure we all had the zoom link and answer any questions before the class which was really nice.

Great class! Highly enjoyable, with a lovely finished product at the end and lots of tips and tricks to allow me to continue with my own book-binding into the future. Friendly & patient teacher, very inclusive and allowed participants to work faster or slower to their own pace.

She was considerate in making sure the ones who struggled to understand while others were able to work quickly. Tech problems with Zoom was only thing that was the issue but other than that, loved it

This was a fantastic class. Frances is a warm and friendly teacher who showed us every step very clearly and supported each member of the group individually so that we could work at our own pace without feeling like we were waiting or being left behind. Having our own choice of papers was a lovely way to personalise our books. I learned a lot and I am already working on my next book!

Thank you for the lovely relaxing session and offering this over zoom so I could join from comfort and safety of home, 2000 kilometres away! I had such a lovely afternoon hanging out with other creative people and feel inspired. I finished my book afterwards and am now doing another one. I enjoyed learning by making ‘mistakes‘! I quite like the effect of one of my ‘errors’ so I’m leaving it that way for now and will try again on the next one. :-) I found Frances’ style so warm and flexible, helped me persist and enjoy the process. I found that what Frances offered was so generous for the price, with the materials we received, the time and the PDF of instructions and recommended links for more learning/ inspiration.

I had always wanted to learn book binding and so when I saw this class I knew I had to give it ago and this class did not disappoint. It was fun to see a book slowly coming together from making the covers to binding the pages together. I really enjoyed this class and while I wasn't able to finish my book in the class I know I have got the skills to keep trying it alone. I am also feeling confident to try it by myself which is nice. Frances is such a nice teacher, so approachable and went above and beyond to provide us with lots of resources which we can refer back to, you can tell she is really passionate about this craft. Additionally she was so attentive and even when my craft kit was having problems with delivery she was able to get it sorted. Definitely give this class a go if you have ever had any interest in book binding its worth it.

Frances was an exceptional teacher - I’m yet to finish mine as my toddler came home mid class but the additional information included means I can finish in easily in my own free time!

Highly recommend Frances’s Coptic binding workshop for learning a beautiful and transferable new skill.
