Japanese Ink Painting (SUMI-E)

We are so excited to invite Junko to host and teach in our next live streaming workshop. Junko Azukawa is renowned for her Sumi Painting and Japanese Calligraphy. We fell in love with her work the first time we saw it.

You will learn basic Sumi painting strokes for traditional subjects like bamboo, flower, or a dragonfly. During the session, you will perfect one of the above subjects of your choice and create your own masterpiece towards the end of the lesson under Junko's guidance.

Our class is intentionally small so that everyone gets our undivided attention.

The respective class subject :
8th Aug - (Cherry Blossoms)

Please note : this is a Sumi-e Painting and not a Shodo Class.

Biography
Junko Azukawa grew up in Toyama, Japan, at the base of the central Japanese Alps, a region famous for the natural beauty of its landscape.
She started learning traditional Japanese calligraphy, Shodo, at the age of five and has experienced the vast possibilities that calligraphy and Japanese ink painting, Sumie, can express with just simple, monotone brush strokes.
Toyama, Japan
Junko’s calligraphy teacher Shiro Aoyagi, the founder of the Hokuriku Shodo Academy and also one of Japan’s most respected calligraphy masters, demonstrated his artwork at the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia in 2008 and his work is now represented in the NGV’s collection.
Since becoming a resident of Melbourne, Australia in 2005, Junko has brought her unique artistic talents and outlook to the Australian art scene. She started teaching Japanese calligraphy and painting with children and adults at numerous schools and organisations and also exhibited at a number of galleries in Australia and Japan, most recently at the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia in 2016 - 2017. In 2011 Junko started to use her art form with mental illness patients as a form of therapy with great compassion. She is also sought after in commercial design work for her skillful brushwork from bottle label design to restaurant interior design. She has had her illustrations published in the novel: NAVIGATIO authored by Australian writer Patrick Holland in 2014.

Paper has always had an intimate relationship with people. For those who enjoy this medium, Kami is a treasure trove full of exquisite paper, hand-bound albums, journals, notebooks, unique gift cards, and fine Italian stationery sourced from around the world.

No matter how much we love our phones, social media, internet, and the various conveniences of modern life, we always get excited about books and paper for the varying texture, rustle, crispness and smell. The written word, whether our own or someone else's, expressed in personal or professional affairs, creates a sensory experience, especially when on beautiful papers.

We want to share with you the joy of fine paper and excellence in book binding - both to wholesalers who are seeking the rare and unique, and to our retail customers via our concept store Kami in Brunswick Street, Melbourne and from our online store.

The class was very good, and we enjoyed and had fun. The only issue was that we concentrated in painting bamboo, which is an exercise that allows you to gain some skills with the brush. However, the course was for Japanese calligraphy, something different. We wanted to learn some very basics concepts of calligraphy.
Thank you.
