Learn to Sew for Beginners

Let's break down the basics in a fun way!

Sewing and textiles

1 on 1

Hi there,

I'm here to help you achieve your new goal of learning how to sew! Whether you have sewn a long time ago or have never sewn before, I am here to guide, refresh and teach you new skills.

My class usually begins with teaching you how to use the sewing machine: threading, winding the bobbin, how to stitch accurately, how to control your machine when sewing, how to use the different functions on your machine, how to trouble shoot problems that can occur and a couple handy sewing techniques to get you started!

Next, we can start working on a project of your own. Whether it be how to make a skirt, a dress, a bag or a soft toy, I can guide you through how to read a commercial pattern, how to measure yourself, how to cut out the pattern pieces and sew them together. Before the commencement of the lesson, we can discuss what you'd like to learn and I'll inform you of what materials to bring along.

If you have a sewing machine, it is certainly beneficial to bring it along so you can become comfortable with using it. Otherwise, you can definitely use my machine!

There's no time to waste in a 3 hour session, you will definitely encounter an information overload, but in a good way! So if you are keen, message me for more info or book now and let's arrange a time, one-to-one, to get started!

I studied at UTS a Bachelor of Design in fashion and textiles. I have worked as a designer assistant, a sewing machinist and hand embellisher at quite a few places. Currently I am self-employed as a dressmaker @couturebyrita. I have a burning desire to teach others sewing. I love seeing my student's response to learning and how excited they are when things finally make sense! During my path of learning about sewing, I have always wanted a mentor, or someone to teach the basics in a non-confusing way, and that's ultimately why I want to be that person for someone else!

Rita was truly amazing! From the moment she opened her door, her friendly disposition made me feel at ease. Such a talented young lady. Definitely great value for money paid! I have very basic sewing knowledge, Rita was able to quickly go through what I knew and refine and correct it (I was actually doing one thing wrong all these years and finally know why my machine was playing up lol). Rita answered all my questions and not once did she get angry, upset or a hint of annoyance at my gazillion questions! We went through why we cut this like that or why we sew certain ways, she made a pattern from my daughters dress I took, wow! I honestly learnt so much and the information I gained has been put to great use. I would recommend Rita to anyone and everyone ... Thank you so much Rita!!!

The one-on-one instruction was great as it allowed us to focus on the things I wanted to learn and not on things I already knew. Rita is very patient and no question was too trivial. I left feeling more confident than when I arrived. Would highly recommend This class and Rita.
