Looking for rainy day activities or unique things to do at home? Learn Japanese paper cord knotting and make DIY earrings with Az from Happy JP Designs using the art of Mizuhiki in this fun online class!
Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese art, using a Mizuhiki paper cord. Yes, they are made of paper! The core of the Mizuhiki cord is twisted paper and then dyed or wrapped with coloured thread, then knotted into shapes.
This technique has been used for centuries for gift giving decorations including gorgeous engagement gifts, and for gift money envelopes. It is even used to tie a Samurai’s and Sumo wrestler’s top knot!
In this fun online class, you'll learn an easy and meditative repeating movement of the basic knot Kakemusubi (literary meaning running knot) and make beautiful pon pom mum flower hoop earrings. You will make at least one pair of earrings in the one-hour class and the kit includes one more pair to make in your own time.
Az will also demonstrate how the Kakemusubi knot can be arranged to make other styles of earrings and gift-giving decorations. You can add on an earring kit (gold or sparkly white paper cords with hypoallergenic stainless steel kidney hoop earwire earrings) when you book this class.
Tying knots has lots of symbolic meanings in Japanese culture, such as "tie the knot" "heart to heart" "appreciation of your kindness" "congratulations" and so on. So they are also perfect gift ideas for weddings, paper anniversaries (first wedding anniversary) and to give to close friends.
Please note: You must book at least nine days before your online class as materials are taking longer to get delivered due to the pandemic.
