Made by prodding or poking strips of fabric through burlap or linen from the backside, proddy rugs are a fabulous way of upcycling unwanted clothes and textiles into floor rugs or wall hangings. In their early days, they were often made for more utilitarian use such as by the backdoor as their pile hides the dirt well.
Working on a small piece of hessian, you will create a design and be taught how to poke the rug through the back or through the front using a crochet hook. You can use any material for proddy, however, we will use t-shirt strips for this lesson because of their tensility and ability to grab the hessian.
Rag rugs made this way have many names: clippies, proddies, stobbies, pricked. In Northumberland they are called proggy mats, and in Scotland, they are called clootie mats.
This workshop will be lead by Ffranses Ingram, a visual artist/illustrator living in the Inner West. She has been working in textiles since a child, studied at the School of Wool and Textiles in Adelaide, and has just returned from a two-month residency at the Textile Centre in Iceland where she explored prod rugs using Icelandic materials. Having been brought up in Wales, textiles had to be functional - an idea which she has never really shaken off. She has tried to make her functional items as beautiful and colourful as possible.
T&C
We work very hard to reach our minimum numbers for every workshop, but sometimes (not very often) we just don't get there. When this happens, we need to cancel. To be fair to our team members and to you, we make this decision around five business days before the event. If we cancel the workshop, we will be in touch to organise a full refund.

We run workshops for kids, adults and community groups so everyone can learn how to consume less and make more! With us, you'll see the creative potential in leftover and castaway materials to save them from going into landfill.
At Reverse Garbage you’ll find the materials, skills and inspiration you need to live more creatively, more sustainably and more meaningfully.

More signage to find the actual venue would be helpful. Lovely short workshop for total beginners. Great enthusiastic teacher. Lots of fabrics to share. Might need help finishing the piece even though the finishing process was fully explained.

Great class - clear instructions and plenty of inspiration. Great to learn to create and recycle at the same time
Had a fun time. Francis the teacher was so helpful, inviting and creative. She taught us about the history of Proddy rugs and shared photos and designs. Everything we used was supplied and it was nice to visit Reverse Garbage too. Food and coffee was close by and parking was a breeze.
Really impressed by the class and would absolutley recommend or book again into another class.

We had a great time at this class! It was really simple and anyone can do it, you don’t have to be too creative or good at drawing either. It was nice that the materials are provided and we get to keep the frame to do our own rugs at home. Thanks!

I loved this class! The teacher Francis was so informative, friendly and encouraging. The content was right for the class length and I walked away with all of the skills and knowledge I need to continue with the craft. The venue was good, although not the calmest of places - Marrickville Community Centre / Reverse Garbage on market day - but inspiring and fun. Value for money was superb.

I throughly enjoyed the class. Francine was very generous with her knowledge and instructions were easy to follow. There was more than enough fabric for everyone to choose from.
Ffrancis was a great teacher! -Informative, fun, attention to each students. The class had a very good atmosphere.
Venue was good. It got a bit stuffy so lucky there was a fan.
The materials was good but I think some people’s frame was little wonky. The workshop fee was a very good value. I’ve learned the new techniques of rug making which is a great fun.

This class was most enjoyable. Ffranses was open and friendly and very informative, with gorgeous examples of her own work. Generous with materials and ideas and resources. All materials were supplied but were a bit used. I suggest taking your own pair of scissors and a sharpie. Otherwise it was great.

The Proddy Rug course was excellent. The teacher was wonderful and explained/demonstrated each step really clearly. Heaps of great textiles to play with and I now know what to do with all my old tshirts.
I enjoyed the class very much. Ffrances was enthusiastic and knowledgeable.
Slight suggestions participants to bring scissors as well as hook. Include the frame in the cost.
