In this hands on workshop you will learn a coil weaving technique using Raffia sourced from Madagascar. Raffia has been used in weaving for centuries throughout Europe and Africa, mixed with other fibres like wool, jute, cotton. When weaving with fibre, texture and colour amazing things are made, which are completely unique to the weaver.

During my travels throughout Europe, Asia and Japan, it became obvious how so many cultures developed their own weaving techniques derived from necessity and woven from nature. The woven items bonded people together, the makers, the hunters, gathers and fishers. Possibly where the phrase the "The fibre of our existence" came from.

I am always amazed at the different styles and shapes, colour and textures created in this class and you will be too.

Whether it be with a group of friends, sisters, a corporate event, team builder, or a an open invitation workshop, this workshop is a wonderful way to bring out your creativity and generosity.

Heather's opened her Studio East Village Art House, located in leafy Balmain East initially to continue teaching A\art to adults and school children after school and during school holidays. She had been teaching as an early childhood educator and decided on a change incorporating the best part of her day, teaching art.

Now, she has decided to extend the workshops on offer to adults as well, with a wealth of talent in textile art as well the workshops she offers reflect both her skills learnt throughout childhood raised as one of three daughters with a mother and Grandmother that were both textile crafters. She extended her interest and knowledge when she and her family set up home in Tokyo for five years where she learnt ceramics, Satchiko, Boro embroidery and Sumie ( ink painting) and she makes her own ink from charcoal and gold leaf. Her studio is bright and welcoming located in the front of the family home.
