In this fun and hands on workshop you will learn how to weave a raffia hat.

Long long ago, I remember unraveling one of my Nana's raffia sun hats, to see how it was made, to my surprise it was different to what I expected and I taught myself the technique, that was the beginning of my first cottage industry.
You have probably seen them worn in old masters self portraits by Van Gough, Monet as well as the subjects featured in their art works. Traditionally this style of hat was worn in country France. I source my Raffia from Madagascar, just as my Nana had when she lived in France.

Prior to the workshop I will colour the raffia using natural dyes. During the class I will talk you through the dying process, and we will spend the morning setting up and weaving before breaking for lunch, and then commence hat making. Weaving a raffia hat is mediative, hence your hat will be a part of your soul :), they all take on the makers personality.

I have made them for many members of my family and dearest friends over the past 30 years, and as you will discover no two are the same. All you need to bring along is enthusiasm and a friend or two if you like.
