Alison is a full-time studio potter and teacher living in the Adelaide Hills. She has been making pots for over 30 years but clay has been a part of her life from early childhood. Memories include hands in the sticky red ‘Murram’ mud in Kenya where she spent several years as a child, and at high school in the UK creating elaborate sculptural animals and Celtic inspired coil pots.

Alison began formal studies as soon as she came to live in Australia in 1999 gaining a BA at Adelaide Centre for the Arts. She then took up a place on the associate training scheme at the JamFactory in Adelaide and continued as a studio tenant. Before setting up her own studio she took up further study at the University of South Australia obtaining a Graduate Diploma in Arts and Cultural Management.

Alison has built up an extensive library of forming and decorating techniques and enjoys sharing these with students as well as using them to make and decorate pots from the functional to the whimsical. Drinking vessels, bowls, kitchenware are thrown on the wheel with practical simplicity or delicately formed by hand into ultra-fine porcelain objects. She relishes every part of the process of making from design stage and consideration of form and function to indulging in the elaborate, highly decorated whimsy of exhibition pieces.

Alison is a good instructor who made it easy for us all to produce something that was good enough to put in our gardens, but with our own individual touches so that they were all different. The classes are held in Alison's studio in her beautiful garden, which contains many lovely items that she has created. This is my third class and I enjoyed it as much as making the moon gazing hare and garden stakes. My only suggestion would be to make this a 4 1/2 or 5 hour class, as we all took at least 30 minutes over the allocated time. I found it a struggle to finish the decorations in time, so the last part of the class wasn't as relaxing for me, but Alison kindly allowed us to stay until we'd finished. Thanks Alison for an enjoyable class.

It was great to attend this workshop for my second time. The teacher is an expert in her field of ceramics. and is warm and welcoming. Class was held in her studio where we learned the techniques to create our own Moongazing hare. Everything needed was provided, including the firing later. It was wonderful to be amongst other like minded people learning clay building techniques. Even thought it was a cold rainy day, the studio was warm and dry with space for all. A great class that I’d recommend.

Amber Harrison Jul 2023

Really enjoyed the class today with Ali. With her easy to follow step by step teaching we all had a beautiful hare sculpture at the end. The class was relaxed and a lovely small group. It was very therapeutic and a great way to spend a few hours on a Sunday. It was the perfect amount of time to immerse yourself in making with some lovely coffee and cake in the middle when we had a little break. I hope to go along to another class sometime. Highly recommend.

Had a great time making my elephant, the teacher was excellent, demonstrating what to do for each step and ready to help and ask questions along the way. I really appreciated the smaller class size as it meant we could get attention as needed. We even went overtime and were not rushed to finish, which was awesome. I can't wait for my next class! I planted succulents in my elephant and it looks adorable

Lovely informative and attentive teacher with a wealth of knowledge and experience at her inspiring private studio situated in an idyllic location. Had such a fun day making a few things on the wheel. Nice location and small class size meant lots of teacher help!

Ali is one of the most patient, nurturing and genuine "teachers" I've had. Her classes are lots of fun and you are encouraged to be yourself

Lovely venue, highly experienced and thorough teachers who really care about your learning. It was great to know they knew what they were doing and could adapt to where I was at. Patient and kind. The chooks pottering around and the beautiful garden, the entire thing was just lovely.

I am so glad that I booked myself into this class. I had an excellent day learning something new and I am keen to explore more of this art form. Alison and Rose who ran the class were really encouraging and I love your little shop. I can't wait to see my pottery when it has been fired.

Pottery Class: A Day on the Wheel review by Katie Hannan - Adelaide

This workshop was a really terrific introduction to working with a wheel and throwing pots. The teaching team were fantastic and their experience complemented each other well. As a total novice, I left the workshop feeling like I have learned a great deal but also with a whole new appreciation for just how challenging it is to create an object using the wheel. The venue was really relaxing and I loved the chickens roaming in and out! All materials were supplied and the teachers ensured that all participants left with something to show for their efforts. We learned all stages from how to prepare the clay, work with the wheel and ended by decorating our handiwork for collection later. A thoroughly enjoyable experience I would recommend to everyone.

Four of my family attended Alison's Kurinuki workshop for a birthday present. We had a wonderful 2 hours doing new creativity with a great tutor. It was very relaxed and we were supplied with everything we needed - materials, equipment, suggestions and ideas, and the location and sunny autumn afternoon made a very happy experience for all of us - very inspiring, thanks to Alison.

Alison was really knowledgeable and a great teacher. We made multiple pieces working with different clays and got to try out different decorative techniques. I would recommend this course to anyone looking for a fun and creative activity.

Thank your so much for a wonderful experience. 6 people, 6 wheels, 2 teachers, it was just perfect. We weren't rushed, we were fully encouraged and everything was included to make it a very special experience. What an amazing way to spend a day!

Fun and relaxing day. Couldn't fault the venue, teachers or the learning of the "pottery wheel" technique. A very enjoyable day with the added bonus of having some hand made pottery to show off to friends and family.
