Retro Jewellery Class: Chunky Necklace, Earrings

Make sustainable jewellery using 1960s plastic and 1970s wood

2 hours Class size 4 to 8     label $135

Learn how to create your own beaded chunky statement necklace and earrings using vintage treasures in this beginner's jewellery making class and embrace your inner sustainable stylist!

In this Sydney class, you will make an eclectic necklace and a pair of statement earrings using unique materials from our creative toolbox all of which are sourced globally - from house basements or on dusty warehouse shelves in the Bohemia area of Europe (formally Czechoslovakia and West Germany) which was the 19th-century hub for jewellery and bead manufacture.

Materials used:
Lucite, a form of acrylic resin, is similar to Bakelite, both of which are popular mid-century collectables.
Lucite was discovered in 1931 by Du Pont chemists. It was among the first plastics derived from petrochemicals and was sold to jewellery manufacturers after the war. Beads were mass-produced in the 1960s to early 1980s using this material. We will also use 1970s Macramé wooden beads.

This is a great workshop for beginners, sustainable stylists and creatives. Bring a friend and have some fun. Your experienced and passionate teacher, Christine Smalley, founder of ‘Etelage’ (French for adornment) will share with you her 17 years of skills of the trade in jewellery making, gives you a creative toolbox to discover your innate style and you will learn how to make statement eclectic necklace and bold earrings which suit your own unique style and personality. She is inspired by juxtapositions, evident in her unusual colour combinations, highly textured and eclectic compositions her jewellery is known for.

Come and learn some simple jewellery making techniques with a local jeweller!

Inspiring Jewellery Designer, Educator and Stylist

I founded Etelage (French for adornment), a boutique jewellery design studio, in 2002. Fueled with a passion for women to exude their notable and authentic style.
Etelage celebrates the maker culture, creativity and the joy and craftsmanship of handmade.
I am a local inner west, Sydney jewellery designer, passionate educator, author, community-spirited and sustainable style advocate.
I wander the globe to source the beautiful and the unique. From vintage elements which I find in dusty basements to modern elements made by artisans from time-honoured traditions. I observe that generally as a society we are becoming more mindful about our choices: conscious of choosing products which are made using artisan traditions and not mass produced, and seeking quality over quantity.

My goal is to create exciting and original creative workshop experiences, encouraging all my students to awaken their creative soul and seek beauty, slow, artisan and local.

I love creating a teaching environment where participants can share ideas, be inspired and let their imaginations run wild! With over 18 years teaching experience from TAFE, corporate and community groups, to hens parties and private tuition, I am dedicated to empowering my students to become better designers and better makers, equipping them with skills and confidence to create whatever they dream!

Learn how to string chunky necklaces, knot eclectic beads, link chandelier earrings, use buttons and buckles in jewellery design, and more at our friendly and intimate studio spaces in Rozelle and Summer Hill (Sept 2020). Alternatively, we can travel to your venue. (for group bookings only)

I invite you to come and learn some simple jewellery making techniques with a local jeweller, which will impress you as well as your friends.

Etelage jewellery workshops are perfect for individuals, corporate bookings or a group of friends.

Let's make and play together and unlock your inner creative!
