In this four week course, you will be guided through the step by step process of creating a portfolio of industry-standard night photographs by industry professional Lynn Smith. You will get the chance to explore the creative opportunities that night light offers on three photoshoots and learn how to use your own camera to manipulate light and capture a beautiful night photograph.
Lynn will teach you about compositional and technical elements used to create night-time imagery. Get hands-on and create magic with just the click of a button at this intermediate course!
Techniques you will learn:
- Manipulating lighting (low light, nightlight, artificial light)
- Proportion, perspective, paradox, point of interest (four Ps of street photography)
- Purposeful blurring and light trails
- Camera metering
Course outline:
Session One: Theory class
- Lynn will brief you in pairs, assigning each of you an eminent night street photographer to analyze and discuss
- You will report back to class on what images you like most and why
- A brief night shoot in the classroom's vicinity to get you confident using your own equipment
Session Two: Darlinghurst Night Shoot
- You'll walk the local streets and laneways and capture the mood of Sydney after dark using your camera
- Lynn will spend some one-on-one time with you and give you some personal tips and tricks
Session Three: King St, St.Peter's Night Shoot
- Experience and capture the grungy end of King Street with its flourishing bohemian street art culture, quirky cafes, and eclectic clothes and junk shops
- Practice your new skills and get hands-on capturing your won artful shots
Session Four: Theory class
- You will partake in a peer assessment of images
- In pairs, you will analyse and discuss each other's best three shots
- You will then report to the whole class which images in your colleague's gallery you like the most and why
- Lynn will then add his own comments.

This is an intermediate photography class. Ideally, you have either completed a basic camera course or be a self-taught photographer with a few years of experience.

- Any image-making device is acceptable (film cameras, rangefinder and SLR), compact digitals with fixed lenses, mirrorless with interchangeable lenses, recent smartphones with a night shooting featureÂ
- DSLR camera or Smartphone or film camera
- Camera or devices fully charged with a spare battery for DSLRs
Note: If using film, one roll of high-speed negative film (400ASA minimum) of 20 exposures per street shoot.
This class series runs over 4 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.
