Traditional Kintsugi Intensive Course

Learn the traditional Kintsugi method in just two days!

2 x 2 hours Class size 1 to 2 (public classes), 1 to 6 label $385

This class is perfect for those who live outside of Sydney and those busy during weekdays. Many people have already come to us to learn Kintsugi from all over Australia.

In this intensive two-day weekend course for beginners, you will be guided by Master of Kintsugi Jun Morooka and learn how to repair pottery using the traditional Japanese Kintsugi method.

This technique is perfect to restore your favourite items instead of throwing them away, which contributes to a zero-waste lifestyle while keeping a beautifully restored and now unique piece.

Over the course of the weekend, you will have three Kintsugi lessons that run for about 1.5 to 2 hours each.

The classes will consist of lots of instruction and practical making time. You will leave this intensive workshop with lots of experience as well as the tools, information and written materials necessary to continue to work on new Kintsugi projects at home.

We can also accept private requests for this course. Contact us for more information.

Please note: Plates vary depending on availability.

Kintsugi Australia is located in Sydney and the only organisation in Australia completely specialised in kintsugi, offering private and group lessons, repair and kintsugi artistic creations. After completing the traditional course, the students can join the Kintsugi Dojo where they can continue to create their own work of art, and they can improve their technique to become kintsugi masters.

Kintsugi Dojo is available only in Sydney main studio, but online Dojo is starting in February 2021.

Beginner’s, Traditional and Kintsugi accessory courses are held in Melbourne nearly every month and occasionally in Brisbane.

Jun Morooka is a kintsugi master. He is an expert in the Traditional Kintsugi method with natural lacquer (urushi) and gold. He has also developed his own method using modern material, bringing innovation to an ancient technique. He accepts commissions to repair broken pottery and ceramics with kintsugi.

Jun Morooka was born in Tokyo in 1959. He moved to Sydney in 1987 and in 2008 he started to manage a Japanese restaurant called JIPANG. He fell in love with kintsugi after watching a TV documentary. He decided to go back to Japan to train with five kintsugi masters in Kanazawa and Tokyo. In 2018, he established Kintsugi Australia in Sydney.

Jun Morooka teaches Traditional Kintsugi and Modern Kintsugi in Sydney, Melbourne and Newcastle, he exhibited his artwork at the Sydney Adventist Hospital in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Department. "Kibou" and "Negai" were displayed in the hospital to show that scars can become beautiful.

In June 2020, "Jikuu" was selected as a finalist in the 2020 Northern Beaches Art Prize - Open Category. The artwork was selected among over 800 entries and was displayed during an online exhibition (31 July - 30 September 2020).

Jun Morooka has appeared on a number of media outlets, such as ABC News and SBS Australia. An audio interview is available on SBS Japanese Radio and a video interview on SBS Australia Facebook page. He was also featured on ELLE DECOR (Spain).

Jun Morooka was invited to give a kintsugi lesson during the TV Show The Bachelor Australia aired on Channel 10 on the 17th of September 2020.

Jun San is an excellent teacher and made me feel at ease immediately. He shared the history of Kintsugi and further reading resources. He was very patient and obviously loves his craft and teaching. This lesson was the first of 3 traditional Kintsugi Intensive lessons. He was very accommodating about spreading the lessons out further so I would receive the best instruction possible. I'm looking to incorporate this in an Art Project of traditional techniques that I'm in the early stages of developing and so perfect for me. I very much look forward to the next 2 lessons. Shayne

I thoroughly enjoyed this traditional Kintsugi class. Jun-San is a very calm and patient teacher with a lot of experience with Kintsugi. He obviously loves to teach this ancient art. And the lovely Hitome-San is a very gracious host. The studio is filled with interesting and beautiful Kintsugi pieces. I am looking forward to the second class when I will learn more about the art of mindful mending. Arigato guzaimas

I really enjoyed attending the course. the teacher was very precise in teaching the technique, which is very complicated.
I can say that I am satisfied.
if I have to give advice, I think it would be better to have a bigger table to work better and maybe more days within a month, to learn the real development of this technique

Jun is an excellent teacher.
Traditional kintsugi is very different to modern kintsugi and a great skill to have, especially if you are a potter. I will also use this in my woodwork.
I am really happy to have been able to find and participate in this class and other classes at Kintsugi Australia.
I highly recommend Kintsugi Australia.

Learning traditional Kintsugi method is very enjoyable. It is quite a complex process but Jun sensei explains and demonstrates very clearly and provides comprehensive notes and guidance, so I feel confident that I can go home and continue to practice by myself, until I hav another opportunity to learn more. I am very impressed that Jun sensei was able to teach so much in just one weekend. Arigatou gozaimashita

Having always been fascinated by the philosophy of Kintsugi that something broken can be reassembled "to be even more beautiful” we made a trip to Sydney and enrolled in a 2day intensive course with Jun.
We had a fabulous couple of days - we were greeted with a warm welcome and our Kintsugi materials were well organised and waiting for us on our desk so we could get to work. Jun explained the techniques clearly and thoroughly and provided written instructions as well. He was alongside us whilst we worked giving us encouragement and tips along the way. We now feel equipped and confident to practice these techniques at home and are so glad we came and did the course. Both of us returned to Melbourne feeling refreshed and relaxed
Thankyou to Hitomi for her warm hospitality- we loved the Japanese tea and biscuits and laughing and chatting with you both throughout the course. If you love Kintsugi- we can not recommend this course more highly.
