Traditional Marbling Workshop: Turkish Ebru

Learn how to paint on water and discover the traditional Turkish art of Ebru!

3 hours Class size 1 to 10     label $155 - $165 ($165 per guest when you book for 1 guest, $155 for 2+ guests)

Ebru, also known as water/paper marbling, is the traditional Turkish art of creating colourful patterns by dropping and splashing paints onto a tray of solution with special brushes. Paper and other materials are then dipped into the solution to preserve your pattern onto their surface.

In this workshop, you will gain knowledge of the history of Ebru and an introduction to the traditional materials and techniques used to create the patterns, before transferring them onto paper. On your final printing, we will use non-paper objects such as Bamboo fans or coasters.

During the session we will learn to create at least six different Ebru patterns and their variations:

  • Battal Ebru - Stone or Rock Pattern
  • Gel-Git Ebru - Tidal Pattern
  • Taraklı Ebru - Combed Pattern
  • Şal Ebru - Shawl Pattern
  • Bülbül Yuvası Ebru - Snail Pattern
  • Dalgalı Ebru - Spanish Pattern

Ebru has a lot to offer to people in terms of Turkish culture with it being listed as a UNESCO heritage-listed traditional art as well as being a relaxing, fun and unique experience.

Ebru is a mesmerising world that will transport you to a place of zen as you manipulate and transform your paints into intricate patterns that are unique and it’s impossible to replicate. It helps participants to discover their inner vision and discover their inner creativity while easing their anxiety and stress by providing tranquillity to the soul. The end result of this work is a piece with its own spirit and nature that looks like magic.

This rare art form is mostly about focusing on the process itself and exploring/ experimenting with colours on water surface rather than the product but you can expect to obtain a series of at least seven to eight ebru papers at the end of the session, depending on the time you spend for each of your designs.

I loved the class. The venue was great, the room large with plenty of space to work. Having a small class was also a bonus. Eda was a great teacher, clearly demonstrating the skills and assisting individuals as needed. She was very organised, with workstations set up for each person, and papers named so we could collect them easily at the end. Eda showed us a variety of patterns and there were plenty of tools to practice with. There were also a great range of colours to use. We were able to practise each technique a number of times and use our own creativity to create mini works of art. I could have kept going all day! The Turkish coffee at the end of the class was delicious. Eda's husband was very helpful drying our work and making the coffee. Thank you, Eda!

The teacher was knowledgeable and generous about her information, the venue was good, light and airy, the other class members were interesting and fun. I would have liked a more extensive range of papers to experiment on/with.

What a marvelous way to spend a morning, making beautiful, traditional and contemporary Ebru (marbled papers). Our teacher was passionate and skilled in her Art form, and passed on that enthusiasm to the class. We learned several patterning methods, using the various hand-prepared colours and traditional awls and combs, and ended the session by marbling a fan, to add to our array of papers and gift cards, to take home. A thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying class. Thank you Eda Tevrizci from Marbling Art Studio, for your knowledge and expertise, and "The Old Auction House" Kyneton, for the venue.

I loved doing this workshop. Eda is a lovely teacher who simplified everything for us and also gave us the history of ‘Marbling’ or ‘Ebru’. It’s is lots of fun and you don’t need to be artistic to get great results with this medium.

I was really looking forward to this class and I was not disappointed! Eda was lovely and she was an excellent teacher. She had completed a lot of preparation for the session, and when we arrived all the equipment was set up and ready for us to use. She explained the history and processes of making ebru very clearly and concisely, and she demonstrated and described the techniques in small blocks, allowing us to have a go at various ways of making ebru art. We left the session with numerous pieces of marbled art on paper, a marbled bamboo fan and a greeting card and envelope. We also shared some delicious Turkish delight and lovely Turkish coffee at the end of the workshop. The venue was perfect, with lots of parking and a great workspace. I must also thank Eda’s husband who patiently dried our art and prepared the coffees. I highly recommend this workshop to anyone who is interested in learning a new skill and understanding more about the history of this beautiful art form. Eda’s passion for ebru translated wonderfully into quality teaching.
