In this six-week course, you will be guided through the step by step process of producing your own video from start to finish from expert cinematographer Leo Townsend. You will begin with familiarising yourself with your DLSR camera and then learn the basics of how to master your DSLR camera settings.
You will also learn how to expose a shot properly, how to compose a shot and use different camera movements, record audio from multiple sources, light a subject, film an interview and so much more!
Week One: Introduction
- Introduction to DSLR and mirrorless cameras
- Camera file types, resolutions and frame rates
- Understanding exposure by exploring shutter speeds, ISO, aperture and white balance
- Understanding lenses, focal lengths and depth of field
Week Two: Camera practices
- Discussion of recommended camera practices and settings
- How to set up your camera for video
- Colour temperature
- Understanding picture profiles
Week Three: Practical outdoor night shoot
- Camera movement and camera coverage
- Learn various methods of moving the camera, such as using a tripod and handheld techniques
- Try it out for yourself!
Week Four: Interview shoot
- Learn how to record audio for your DSLR. You will be taken through the steps of how to recording on your camera as well as how to use external audio recorders
- How to use different types of microphones, from wireless lapel mics to shotgun mics
- Experience the difference between soft and hard light sources as well as the basics of 3 point lighting using LED light panels
- Using multi-camera shooting for interviews and learn how to set up and sync two cameras that can be edited together in post-production
Week Five: Practical lighting exercise
- Discussion and exploration of product lighting
- How to light shots for different objects and incorporate different camera movements and backgrounds
Week Six: Summary and review
- Shooting video testing and audio for Vox pops
- Review of work throughout the course
