Your cooking class will be a true bonding experience for your friends, family or work colleagues. When you learn to cook together, this help people better communicate, delegate tasks, see tangible results from their efforts and simply have fun together.

Your professional chefs help your colleagues, friends or family work together in a cohesive, positive and efficient way to create a delicious meal together. Not only will you learn cooking skills you can use in your own kitchens at home, you will learn how to effectively communicate and work together. These are important skills that will easily translate from our kitchens to your office or social setting.

People from all cultures, ages, interests and cooking abilities gather in our kitchens to share the universal experience of cooking, learning and of course, eating!

Your highly skilled chefs are trained to be engaging and inspiring teachers and leaders in the kitchen. They will help your team or group break down barriers that may exist in the workplace or social setting as you all participate in this fun, playful team bonding event.

The results could be the recipe for your organisation’s success. Pre-determine your groups to make sure certain people work together or let the bonds build organically. Each event’s topics and objectives are customised to meet your goals, schedule and budget.

A TRIP TO JAPAN
Be your own sushi master! With a little practice and our chef’s helpful hints, you will learn how easy it really is to make sushi in your own kitchen. Take your sushi skills to the next level and discover new techniques, ingredients and preparations. In the class. you’ll be learning on how to select and properly cut sushi for creating intricate maki rolls, hand rolls and nigiri. Plating techniques and methods will also be covered.

A TRIP TO VIETNAM
Spend an afternoon or evening preparing a scrumptious Vietnamese street food based on fresh produce, fresh seasonings, fine meats and seafood. To make your meal complete, your chef is happy to give you tips and tricks for your next trip to Vietnam.

On the menu:
  • Vietnamese rice paper rolls
  • Vietnamese Noodle Salad or roll noodles - Bun thit nuong or banh hoi thit quay

  • Food we bring: noodle, meat and seafood, herbs and toppings
  • Equipment we bring: pot, induction cook top, small BBQ charcoal or gas
  • Venue need to have hand washing, prep sink, power points and be open air for BBQ set up and deep fry spring rolls
  • We cater for no seafood, vegan, gluten free with rice paper for the spring rolls, dairy free

A TRIP TO THAILAND
Come explore the exotic and fresh flavours of Thailand! We’ll teach you how to balance the quintessential flavours of Southeast Asia sweet, sour, salty and spicy- so you can confidently prepare the vibrant and exciting flavours of Thai cuisine. This menu just happens to be gluten free!

On the menu:
  • Thai papaya salad
  • Green Chicken Curry and Rice

A TRIP TO CHINA
Gather around our table and ready to be in the dumpling party, hand-crafted dumpling and wonton while experiencing China’s diverse culinary regions. This hand made dumpling class includes a lot of dumplings and wonton, so come hungry plus a container to take yours home too.

On the menu:
  • The Arts of Dumplings
  • The Wonder Wonton Soup

  • Equipment we bring: roller pins, pot, steamers, induction cook tops or gas cook tops

A TRIP TO ITALY
Become a pizza chef for a day. Let an expert pizza chef help you to understand how to knead, roll out and garnish your pizza, using local and fine products and bake it in a 450 degree oven. Discover the secrets behind a good pizza, using only fresh products, such as peeled tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil and DOP olive oil. Then, take a seat to enjoy a good beer or a glass of wine.

On the menu:
  • Hand made pizzas
  • Fresh pasta or Gnocchi and Neapolitan sauce

  • Food we bring: pre made dough, flour, toppings
  • Equipment we bring: pizza oven, gas bottle, tray, pepper plates...
  • Your wenue need to have have hand washing, prep sink and be open air for the pizza oven and/ or allow to use the camping gas burners
  • We cater for no seafood, vegan. Not suitable for gluten free

Please note:
  • We do not bring large items such as demonstration tables, kitchen, hand-wash facility, gas, and electric stoves and ovens and you can hire some equipment. We will tell you if we require a special piece(s) of equipment depending on the menu and you will pay for the hire or purchase cost.
  • If you book one station then we will cook one menu with a chef. We will demonstrate and work with the participant to repeat the dish. They will have the food of their labour. The session will be for two hours.
  • If you book more than one station, we will set up different cooking stations with a chef on hand in each station. Each customer will cook, eat, share and clean up on one station then move to the next station. They will eat as they go and have time to bond or catch up while the chef reset for the next round. Each station will have a total of one hour: 30 minutes to cook, 15 minutes to eat and 15 minutes to clean up. The station will hold up eight to 12 people. The more people the more dishes/stations you can select.
  • We can book a mobile bar if you require one - we can quote once we know the number of guests.

Otao kitchen is a cooking school and event space with a mission for people to come together to cook, connect, celebrate. We believe cooking and eating should be an experience, not just a meal. We created Otao kitchen as an extension of our passions to cook, share and inspire.

EXPERT IN COOKING CLASSES

Otao kitchen was launched in Melbourne, Australia in July 2014, with the goal of celebrating the rich and varied cooking experiences of Melbourne’s immigrant multicultural communities. Its founder, Chef Ha Nguyen, originally from Hanoi shares his passion for food, instructing customers in the exotic diaspora of Asian and around the world cuisine.

Today our guests can get inspired by cooking with our local and international chefs, listen to their cooking and travel experiences in Asia and around the world and bring some cooking and cultural tips and tricks home. With the nods at the diversity of communities within Melbourne, Otao kitchen features an array of global food experiences from Indian to Japan to Mexico and more.

In 2020 with the challenge of global Covid 19 pandemic, we set out to capture the curriculum of our hands-cooking classes and deliver it online to home cooks in Australia and across the world to guide you to cooking success and better health.
