I learnt about solid hardwood timber lamination. I learnt the purpose & operation of a jointer, bench saw, thicknesser & band saw. I learnt about hardwood timber, the different methods of cutting logs, grain & figure. I learnt about workshop safety & awareness. I learnt about the safe & correct use of hand tools. I learnt about timber sealers. I enjoyed Tim's teaching / facilitation approach. Why? First the explanation. Then the demonstration. Tim allowed me to learn by doing, rather than intervene, complete the task & get me to move on to the next activity. The atmosphere was positive. The pace was comfortable. It was conducive to learning. It was clear to me that a lot of thought has gone into the course design & the class planning. The instruction & activity flowed very well for a class of six. The equipment was in good working order. Tooling was new/sharp.

What an amazing class and business. Making an absolutely gorgeous hard wood chopping board from pieces of recycled timber was so rewarding. Our instructor was so supportive and explained everything clearly so that we could mirror everything step of the process with ease and confidence.
Thank you Amongst the Trees. I’m very confident that I will be back!

Tim was awesome—Super clear instructions, very patient. Always willing to help but also stands back to let you do the work yourself. Really great teacher. Among the Trees was a great place to do it, I loved the concept of a whole shop purely made of tools and materials that would’ve gone to the tip.

Loved the 2 days building a side table and will be back to do more. I learnt a lot by 'getting on the tools' and found the experience really satisfying. I was really impressed with the table design that we were given - well ahead of my expectations - which added to the sense of pride in the outcome! Tim was a great workshop teacher - very knowledgable and explained the materials, tools and steps clearly. I couldn't have done without his help and guidance as well as patience to fix minor mis-steps to end up with a quite beautiful table.

2nd course we've done at "Among the Trees". Informative and patient teachers that guide you every step of the way. Fun day out and you get to take home your build. Will definately sign up for a 3rd course. Highly recommend!

It was a great laidback class. Very accessible use of unknown tools, with helpful and encouraging supervision. A great gateway to woodworking, I definitely now want to do more at home and come back for more complex classes.

I booked this class for my 9 year old son after he really enjoyed the kid's noughts and crosses class. My son loved this class, it was really hands on for him and he was able to have a lot of control over what materials he used and where he placed the blocks/logs etc so he really loved it. Not an issue that there wasn't a break for the class as we could work at our own pace.

Very relaxed and enjoyable class. It is fairly open-ended with a workshop feel: you're given a bunch of options, and a run down of the key things you need to know, then you can choose your path, try out different approaches and different tools, and see where you get to. Nick was a great teacher with a wealth of knowledge to share, and very good at ensuring that everyone in the class got the support they needed. No prior knowledge or experience needed. Recommended!

It was a haven for the week where we used recycled timber and learnt wood working skills which both dated back to the middle ages. With Luke's knowledge and guidance we used these to create a grand work bench that will last another age. It was a wonderful experience.

The class was great, Shane is very knowledgeable and helpful and taught us all the process really well in a day! The only thing stopping me from French polishing any timber I have is time - maybe thankfully!! Nice class, nice process!

Nick Linsley Attended Jun 2026

Shane ran a great class! He did a really good job of explaining and demonstrating the fundamentals of French Polishing. I feel like I have enough knowledge backed with a little bit of hands on experience to add this technique to my finishing skillset and learn more as I experiment with it.

Rocky Rozario Attended Jun 2026

Shane was very good at introducing us to French Polishing and explaining the concepts. Teaching us how to fix problems - should we encounter them - was a bonus. Well structured and plenty of hands on experience - great course.

Carolyn Trotter Attended Jun 2026

Shane is very knowledgeable, and his teaching style is relaxed and clear. His passion for French polishing is infectious. I left the course with a reminder of what I am capable of, and enthusiasm for a new way to enhance my woodworking projects.

What a great day! My wife and I did the basic woodworking course about making a picture frame. We bought our wedding photo and a 25 year anniversary photo to make a couple of matching frames.
Luke was a great teacher, patient and full of knowledge and useful advice.
What Harry doesn’t know about wood planes is not worth knowing.
A thoroughly enjoyable day, highly recommended. Thanks guys!

Thank you to Mark, Tim and Ren for your passion, patience and generosity in helping each of us turn an aspiration into reality.
I loved the weekend, and am so thrilled to have my ‘Me Made’ chair in my home where I will see it everyday and remind myself what I can achieve. My Dad would have loved it, and I think both him and my Grandfather would be proud of my beautiful chair.
I appreciate that you each care enough to want to keep improving and fine tuning the course, and learning from/with your students.
The weekend is a great investment in having something unique to treasure. I was a bit nervous at the beginning, but I was in very capable hands showing me one step at a time and with due respect for safety.
It was a great group of students - I loved how everyone helped each other with bits here and there.
Massive THANK YOU to all at Among the Trees, for saving the timber, for caring about our planet, and for giving us access to something very special. Xxx
