Teacher was very helpful and kept the store open for me even though it was a public holiday. Thanks

June was lovely and very patient with me as a beginner to watercolour painting. No materials needed and I was able to take my masterpiece home. Thank you June

Watercolour Painting Workshop for Beginners review by Caroline Lam - Melbourne

Teacher's response

Thank you Caroline for your warm and friendly review! When you said you are a beginner at watercolor painting, in fact I am also a beginner to run a brand new workshop. So all the kindly encouragement from you guys is precious and helpful to me! I hope all beginners can enjoy the art journey and I will continue sharing my own experiences with everyone. Most of the time I taught myself and spent long hours on practising, so I know how beginners normally think and feel. Patience and persistence are more important than other things. Beside those things, we need to observe carefully what we see every day. Painting is a way to relax, so enjoy it! No pressure!

The class was enjoyable and relaxing but it’s an odd set up at the back of a shoe shop, and we only got one small piece of watercolour paper- I expected more. Not very organised- equipment was heavily used and dirty.

Teacher's response

I want to say something to people who never went to the workshop:

1. it is in the back of a "shoe" shop, but there are also handmade jewellery and other beautiful things. There is also a small art gallery displaying oil paintings/ watercolour paintings /acrylic paintings.

And I don't know what is wrong with shoes. In my eyes, shoe design is also art. I liked to use chalk to draw high heels when I was just 8 years old. If I can I like to become a shoe designer.

I had learnt drawing and painting in VAS art school before, and their class room is even smaller and older than most other people's workshop. They even leave an old pillar with dirty paints on it on purpose after a renovation, because some famous artists ' or unknown art students ' time had been spent in the small room.

2. I keep my "dirty" palette because I know they are useful. Yesterday when the young girl wanted to paint the wooden bridge, she didn't know what colours she should use. And I just used my" dirty" / rubbish colours simply solved the problem.

3. Yes, people can be very tidy. But some artists do have unorganised desks. There are 4 long tables, when you wanted to use other tables, you don't have to be crowded with other people.

4. There are lots of brand new materials on the shelves. If you like you can use them as much as you want.

5. For the small sized paper.... from my experience, beginners should start from simple pictures and small sized paper.

To do the basic practice is the fundamental step of art.

But if you just want to spend 2 hours playing with brushes and paints, you can tell me in the beginning, and I will supply big sized paper.

6. And because the fee is reasonably low, if you need an A3 sized professional watercolour paper, for example, Arches, I have to charge $8 extra for it.

Enjoy your art journey!

June is a very patient and encouraging teacher. I had a great time learning from her! I had to leave early, but I made two bracelets and two pairs of earrings in 1.5hrs! I'm loving them so much that I put some of them on the minute I got into my car lol

Thank you for your review!

I think your designs are beautiful. Great job!

I booked a workshop with my daughter for Mother's Day and we created bracelets for each other: we had a lovely time together and June was very nice and helpful.
We had a beautiful Mum-daughter time.

Teacher's response

Thank you Stephanie for your lovely words! It was a great afternoon for me either. I can't forget your daughter's creative works and her serious face when she was concentrating on her own work! She is such a smart kid. I think we both got inspired by her at some stage.

June was lovely, very generous with her time and experience. She has a great space to hold the classes and showed me different resources and materials to work with. June offers this class free at this stage so it is great for beginners like me who would like to experiment and explore. June was very encouraging.
