What you'll do

Looking for unique things to do in Melbourne? Join this life painting course today!

This four week course will take you on a journey to discover your artistic voice and style through a completely unique experience.

We will explore different approaches to figure drawing and painting with demonstrations and a drawing warm-up at the start of each session.

Focusing on different challenges each week, we will cover proportion, measurement, torque, and twist in the body and painting bodies in motion. We'll also spend time learning different techniques with our materials.

Each class will include a tutorial/demonstration followed by drawing exercises to loosen up and get comfortable with the setting, the model, and your materials.

We'll do 60-second through 10 minutes sketches for our warm-up. Then, we will dive into painting and finish the session with a critique. Your teacher will also give personal attention to each student during the course.

You'll find yourself swaying as you paint to music that sets the scene for our models, inspiring their dance and your creativity to capture the essence of the moment.

By the end of the course, you can take home your unique artworks, as well as newfound confidence in life drawing and painting.

Please bring your choice of art supplies including:

Charcoal, graphite, or pastel and sketching/drawing paper to suit
Your choice of paints - watercolours, acrylics, or oils
Paint brushes and appropriate paper or canvas depending on your choice of paints
A warm paint-friendly jacket or jumper to stay warm - it can feel chilly even with the heaters on

Hi - I'm Maureen Barten - an artist by passion and lifelong training. I have been creating artwork in various media since I was a child. I began painting at university by default - and graduated with a degree in fine arts - which was not what I had planned.

I am also a traveller and love to paint wherever I go. And so began my love affair with watercolours and my very mobile art studio - in a backpack!

Durig the Covid years 2020-2022 I ran an online art school called Zoom Art with Maureen and discovered my HEARTwork! Working with many artists of all levels - beginners through advanced, my most significant rewards have been witnessing the growth and willingness to try something new amongst my students. By creating a safe space to explore, without judgement, the artist - the creator and the magician unfold!

My commitment as teacher, guide or mentor is to challenge you - to hover in the space of comfort and discomfort long enough to grow a new pathway in the riverbed of your brain. STAY CURIOUS!
