On the search for unique things to do at home? Learn Japanese jewellery making with Az from Happy JP Designs using the art of Mizuhiki at this fun online class!

Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese art, using a Mizuhiki paper cord. Yes, they are made of paper! The core of the Mizuhiki cord is twisted paper and then dyed or wrapped with coloured thread, then knotted into shapes.

This technique has been used for centuries for gift giving decorations including gorgeous engagement gifts, and for gift money envelopes. It is even used to tie a Samurai’s and Sumo wrestler’s top knot!

In this fun online class, you'll learn how to tie basic knots (two types of knots) that will transform a simple Mizuhiki cord into two pairs of beautiful earrings during the class. The first pair (very basic knot) and the second pair (one more step than the first pair) are two different designs. Plus the kit includes the materials for the third earrings for your own time!

Az will also demonstrate how the Mizuhiki cords are used to produce gift giving for special occasions. Tying knots has lots of symbolic meanings in Japanese culture, such as "tie the knot" "heart to heart" "appreciation of your kindness" "congratulations" and so on. So they are also perfect gift ideas for weddings, paper anniversaries (first wedding anniversary) and to give to close friends.

The kit includes three pairs of hooks/hoops stainless steel ear wire. If you don't have pierced ears, you can add on stainless steel clip-on earrings when you book.

Mizuhiki items are not only beautiful to wear but also very light and strong. It is very easy to wear these earrings for long hours without having sore ears. Come along and make some beautiful earrings with us!

Please note: You must book at least 9 days before your online class as materials are taking longer to get delivered due to lockdown restrictions.

Hi, I'm Az. I'm an Interior Designer and a Japanese Mizuhiki artist.

What is Japanese Mizuhiki art?

Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese paper cord used originally for special occasions, such as engagement gifts from the groom's family to the bride's family, and for gift money envelopes. Yes, they are made of paper. The core of Mizuhiki cord is twisted paper and then dyed or wrapped with coloured thread, then knotted into shapes. It is also used to tie a Samurai’s and Sumo wrestler’s top knot! Today we use it for making jewellery and other beautiful objects.

I moved from Canberra to Perth in January 2023, and now my new art activities will be refreshed and am seeking further goals to share with more people. "Tie the knots" I also sell items from my Etsy store under the name happyJPdesigns.
