Gardening Class: Backyard Herbalism

Gain an understanding of medicinal weeds and herbs with an experienced naturopath in Brisbane

3 hours Class size 1 to 25 guests       $95

Join us at the farm with a qualified naturopath, Melissa Salmon, and farm founder Matt Bakker, to learn all about the medicinal plants growing around us! This will be a fun and interactive morning exploring and foraging around the farm for common plants that can be used to enhance your overall wellbeing and vitality.
We'll spend some time learning the basic principles and theory behind herbalism, farm-to-table medicine and making at-home wellness remedies. Melissa will share her in-depth knowledge of how to work with what is locally available to create your ways of building wellness, including: the vegetables, herbs, and weeds that you probably already have growing in your garden! This knowledge will be put into practice with a guided foraging walk around the farm hosted by Matt, where we’ll look for useful vegetables, plants, and weeds. After this interactive walk, Melissa will show case how to make medicinal skin balms. And after all that fun, we will finish the workshop chatting over a delicious farm-to-table lunch and nibbles!
The philosophy behind backyard herbalism, local farming, and farm-to-table food centers on reconnecting with how food is grown on the land. What is better than using fresh and seasonally grown ingredients to nourish the body from the inside out? By working with what grows locally (often right in our own backyards!) we support sustainable food systems and also strengthen our wellbeing. This holistic approach to nourishing ourselves through food emphasises the interconnection between nature, nutrition, and overall wellness.
Overall, you will finish the workshop with newfound knowledge, empowerment, and zest for building your wellbeing and vitality (oh, and a full belly!).

Lunch was absolutely delicious and sitting out under the trees on the farm learning and eating with likeminded people was a refreshing end to the week and definitely was a great inspiration to get into the garden and start growing from home!

  • 5/5 from Stephen Toms, attended Sep 2024: A very enjoyable and educational course on a topic that, even as an enthusiastic backyard veggie grower, I had really given very little thought. If your interested in unlocking the secrets to some of these overlooked backyard herbs then I would recommend this course.

The setting on the Neighbourhood Farm was blissful, and all of your senses will be engaged in this hands-on class (listening, smelling, seeing, tasting, touching). Finishing with a delicious lunch spread of farm produce enjoyed under a shady tree was a highlight!

  • 5/5 from Alyce Dunstan, attended Sep 2023: A wonderful place to be, a knowledgable and passionate team, and just a fun morning out. It was so fascinating to learn about some local Brisbane weeds and what Neighbourhood Farm are doing. The presenters, Matt and Melissa, were well spoken with loud clear voices that were easily heard along the farm rows in our large workshop group. They had excellent knowledge, were approachable and fun, and their passion shone through in every thing they spoke about. At the end all the Neighbourhood Farm team contributed to make an incredible lunch of various salads with produce from the farm. The flavours and textures were sensational. I enjoyed sitting under the trees to share my lunch and iced herbal tea with the staff and other attendees. At the end I apologised for not having the time to stay and contribute to the washing up of the dishes, and was told I wasn’t expected to. Bonus! Highly recommend Neighbourhood Farm and Melissa Salmon for their workshops in future. (Photo attached of the toilet signage, which made me smile with its fun and casual inclusivity.)

  • 5/5 from Sue Meiklejohn, attended Sep 2022: Really wonderful experience that I highly recommend to anyone keen to discover more about resources in their own backyard. Lovely rustic farm setting, run by people passionate about what they do. Opened my eyes to the often overlooked ecological importance of weeds and their potential health and nutritional benefits when identified and used correctly. The lunch spread with their delicious home produce was worth the (minimal) cost alone. I've already harvested some chickweed from my own backyard ready to infuse!
