In this beginner's class, you will learn the Japanese art of Ikebana.

You will learn to create a freestyle contemporary Ikebana arrangement based on the design principles of traditional Ikebana. Guided by an experienced Ikebana teacher, the workshop begins with the introduction of Ikebana history and its zen philosophy, a floral demonstration using the tools and techniques.
Come with an open mind and creative interest, return with your artistic creation and the inspiration to create many more arrangements.
Ikebana is an art form that can be shared with and enjoyed by the whole family, bringing beauty to the living space.
The classes are held in a specially built art and Ikebana studio set in the tranquil garden of the artist's residence.
Special workshops for learning about Ikebana, materials, and techniques can be arranged for private groups, clubs, organisations, schools, and others. A minimum of four participants, adults or children, are welcome. The fee varies from the type of workshop and workshop space.

  • 5/5 from Sherrill Glasser, attended Oct 2026: Wonderful class. Highly recommended. Lily is a kind and very knowledgeable teacher, who is keen to share her knowledge and love for this craft to others. Her enthusiasm is catching! She outlined some history and the general principles of the different schools of Ikebana, and provided a printed outline to help us get started, as well as a large selection of pots and materials for the 4 participants to work with. We certainly needed Lily’s guidance and help to produce a finished product that we were all happy to take home. I learnt a lot from the way she did a gentle and positive critique of each piece at the end and helped us to add or subtract final details to really improve our arrangements. I loved this class. Thanks Lily.
  • 5/5 from Lina Jin, attended Oct 2026: The teacher Lily is very knowledgeable and patient. She shared a lot of tips and comments during the whole class. Didn't realize Ikababa has such a deep history in Japan and elsewhere. Very enlightening for an absolute beginner like me!
  • 5/5 from Sylvie Loneragan, attended Oct 2026: Lily was a very knowledgeable and passionate teacher and helped guide us to create beautiful arrangements. I found the experience very relaxing and left very happy with my arrangement! Would love to do it again.

  • 5/5 from Terita Parkes, attended Oct 2026: My Ikebana Flower Arranging Course for Beginners with Lily was most enjoyable & I came away with an arrangement I was very proud of. Lily was a good teacher & imparted her depth of knowledge on a group of novices well. I just need to practise & keep it up so I don’t forget the important rules, tips & tricks. Thanks Terri PS: I hope my arrangement looks as good as when I left & survived the drive home.
  • 5/5 from Charlotte Fowler-Bean, attended Aug 2026: Such a lovely way to spend a Sunday morning. Lily is warm, incredibly knowledgeable and so generous with her time, she took the time to actually get to know each of us before we even picked up a stem, then worked with us individually rather than just demonstrating and leaving us to it. I walked in expecting something fairly passive and walked out having learned a genuinely different way of thinking about balance and simplicity, my instinct was always for dense, symmetrical arrangements, and Lily gently but firmly pushed us all somewhere more considered. Left with a beautiful finished piece and a real appreciation for how much skill sits behind something that looks so effortless. Highly recommend, especially if you assume this kind of thing isn't really "you", that was exactly my assumption walking in too.

  • 5/5 from Melina Kweh, attended Apr 2026: Lily and her class was amazing!! I was in awe with how her trained eye sees things that I didn't pick up when she helped me out with my arrangement, like how a different angle elevates it entirely. I could tell her passion for ikebana and its history runs deep – I loved learning all about it from someone who has great experience with the practice. Highly recommend anyone to spend a lovely afternoon at Lily's and create their own masterpieces.
  • 5/5 from Asiani Simpson, attended Apr 2026: I've enjoyed two wonderful Sogetsu Ikebana classes with Lily and can’t say enough wonderful things about her. She is an incredibly gifted instructor who brings the art of Ikebana to life with such insight and patience. She has a way of explaining the importance of line and space that just 'clicks, ' even for beginners. I cannot recommend her classes highly enough for anyone looking to explore this elegant Japanese art form in a supportive and creative environment.
  • 5/5 from Maria Sieters, attended Apr 2026: Lily was very knowledgeable and a calming influnence, all participants had a great time and went home with our own piece of ikebana art/display. Would be best to advertise as a 2-3hr course depending on participants. Would also be good to have a follow up "working with different materials" or even a Explore the bush with Ikebana in mind session.

  • 4/5 from Kerri, attended Sep 2024: We purchased the workshop for a dear friend for her birthday. Lily was very knowledgeable and helpful. Perhaps a little less talking at the beginning of the session as we didn’t get started with the actual ‘making’ until about 45 mins into the class. We also went over time by about one hour. However, it was very enjoyable, Lily was very knowledgeable, patient and helpful and it was wonderful to have Lily critique our creations at the end of the class. The walk up the driveway was very steep, but worth the walk.
  • 4/5 from Rose Adams, attended Sep 2024: Good value for moneys, all materials provided, good selection to choose from. Teacher very knowledgeable gave history of craft as well as instruction. Feedback on finished arrangement very helpful. Good class for beginners as an introduction to Ikebana.
  • 5/5 from Poppy Wilson, attended Aug 2024: It was an absolutely wonderful class! I learnt so much of the meaning behind this special kind of floral arrangement and the principles of it. Can’t wait to keep making more of my creations along those lines. It was one of my birthday presents for my fiancé who also thoroughly enjoyed the class being a bonsai artist himself. I would recommend this class for anyone who loves nature and art.
  • 5/5 from Carol Parenas, attended Aug 2024: I liked this class, very informative. Lily has her own little studio which is nice and relaxing. Location is also easy to find. Materials for the class is provided, and it opened my eyes that I can use other items found in nature for my flower arranging interest rather than focusing mainly on flowers. I can use twigs, dried leaves, vines... etc. I'm not a creative artsy person, but I did enjoyed learning about Ikebana. Would be a lot better if this class is done on a weekly basis, rather than just a once off session.
  • 4/5 from Violet Ho, attended Aug 2024: A lovely birthday gift from son. The teacher, Lily is friendly & passionate in what she's doing. The studio is a very relaxing environment. After spending some time chatting in the small group we were let free to forage around the studio for materials (dried flowers, sticks, fresh flower and foliage etc). Lilly was very helpful during the process and I found the critique very helpful at the end. I left having had a lovely time and with a beautiful arrangement and pot. Would definitely recommend.
  • 5/5 from Alexandra Barlow, attended Jul 2024: I regularly attend floristry workshops but this was my time at an Ikebana Workshop. Prior to the class Lily emailed us with links to Ikebana webpages so that we could arrive at the class with some prior idea about what to expect together with information about what to bring. The workshop was held in a purpose built studio that was filled with beautiful Ikebana arrangements and an abundance of flowers and other materials that we could choose from for our own Ikebana arrangements. Lily is very warm and welcoming. She keeps her classes to 6 attendees to ensure everyone receives personalised attention and direction as required. Lily offers advice and suggestions to help you achieve your vision without taking over and doing it for you. Lily spends time discussing the origins of Ikebana and

Lily Karmatz is a visual artist and an Ikebana artist and teacher. She has taught Sogetsu Ikebana at the Brisbane Institute of Art, public venues and at her own studio for more than ten years. Ikebana is the ancient art of Japanese flower arrangement which resonates deeply today as the world becomes more environmentally aware and sensitive. Lily's extensive artistic experience, knowledge and teaching abilities are greatly in demand.
Not only is she an installation artist, Lily is also an accomplished painter, sculptor, ceramist and a mixed media artist. Her work is often ephemeral in nature and large in scale. A few of her Ikebana and installation works can be seen in the publication Ikebana Today by an international publisher, Stichting Kunstboek, Belgium.
In her art practice, she also likes working with digital art. She has designed and produced brochures, promotional materials and digital art. She was also a monthly Ikebana lessons contributor for Floral Design Magazine (2004 - 2008) published in New Zealand and distributed internationally.
Ikebana Arrangement
In both 2008 and 2012, Lily was invited to be the Artist in Residence at the Cary Art Centre in North Carolina, USA. From 2011 to 2014, she was selected as one of the Artists on Tour (AoT) by Flying Arts, an organisation that promotes and services visual art education and workshops throughout regional Queensland. In 2010, she was invited as Artist in Residence for Eco Ephemeral Art, North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. During her residencies she created installations and conducted Ikebana art workshops for adults and children. Among her many activities, she is the Ikebana workshops facilitator.
For Lily, Ikebana is not just about beautiful flower arrangements in the house. Her philosophy is simple and direct: "Ikebana as an expressive art form is a disciplined combination of natural elements, human creativity and the constant perfecting of technique." As one student so aptly said, "Ikebana brings nature to my home environment. It's an art form that can be appreciated with the whole family."
