Mini Watercolour Landscape Painting Class for Beginners

Come and get started painting mini watercolour landscapes in this introductory workshop in Brisbane!

3 hours

Class size 1 to 10 (public classes), 6 to 30
  $104

If you've always wanted to be able to sit down and relax while you paint some little landscapes in watercolour, this is the class for you.
We will be working on a bunch of small sheets of top-quality textured watercolour paper, often with multiple little masked sections per sheet (then we get to do tape peels at the end - hooray!).
First, we'll start by working on some exercises to practise our mark making for each key component of a landscape - eg: the sky, clouds, mountains, foliage, land. I'll show you how we can represent certain parts of our scenes with just a few intentional brushstrokes. Please note that line art transfers will be provided for the more detailed scenes if you don't like the idea of painting freehand, though most of our scenes will be quite simplified, without the need for line art.
I will guide you step by step through multiple mini paintings, where we'll experiment with both a looser, expressive style and a slightly more refined approach. You'll learn when you need to work on dry paper, and when to work on wet paper, and you'll learn how to create different textural effects and how different ratios of water and paint will affect the appearance of your brushstrokes.
My goal is to give you a fantastic starting point, so you feel prepared to confidently begin painting your watercolour landscapes at home, and for you to know exactly which materials you can start with, without needing a huge budget. I will be available to answer any questions you may have during the class, and I'd love to see you there!
Please note: This class is booked into the upstairs space at Hive Studios, which requires walking up two flights of stairs. If this is an issue for you, please get in touch, and we can see if the downstairs space is available instead. Thank you!

  • 5/5 from Rebecca Fagan, attended May 2026: This was such a great class. Our teacher was lovely and very knowledgeable and experienced. It was relaxed and at a gentle pace. I knew nothing about water colours at the start and now I’m excited to go and practice on my own. We learnt lots of different techniques and skills.
  • 5/5 from Rosita Day, attended May 2026: My (adult) daughter and I did this workshop with Alex Louisa. We had a terrific afternoon. There was a lot of teaching with clear explanations and demonstrations. We learnt to do skies, clouds, trees, mountains, grass and lakes. We learnt how to remove excess water, wet painting and dry brushing. I've no real experience with watercolour and am quite pleased with my little landscapes. Our teacher was lovely and explained so much but it wasn't overwhelming. Definitely recommend this for beginners but also for someone looking for guidance and how to's.

  • 5/5 from Monique Ibrahim, attended Apr 2026: Really enjoyable and informative class. Plenty of tips and encouragement. Lovely venue. I noticed a few participants had done other classes offered by this teacher, she was kind, patient and professional. Gift card was easy to use however the class price had risen between the purchase and my redeeming. My daughters bought it as a birthday gift, so this was disappointing. Other than this, I highly recommend this class.

Alex is such a kind and calm teacher and explains and demonstrates the techniques in a very clear and concise way. The class has a lovely casual feel and everyone participating has been friendly and encouraging of each other regardless of their level of experience. I’m looking forward to continuing my journey into watercolours and my next class with Alex in the near future. Thanks again Alex!
