This is a comprehensive hands-on workshop where you will learn all the mosaic skills and knowledge required while making an indoor or outdoor mosaic of your choice.
You will also experience the magical world of mosaic! Mosaic is a creative, mindful, therapeutic art form and is a joy to experience.
You can choose to make one of the following items:
  • A birdbath
  • A large indoor mandala (40cm high)
  • A large indoor mirror (55cm diameter)
  • A large Chamsa (40cm high x 31.5cm wide)
  • A planter (30cm diameter x 25cm high)
  • A large outdoor butterfly (35.5cm high x 47cm wide)
At the payment stage you can select your design option.
Over this 5-week workshop, you will learn how to make an indoor or outdoor mosaic from start to finish. You'll get creative working with a range of materials, adhesives, substrates, tiles, and grouts that are used for indoor/outdoor mosaics, as well as learning how to cut glass using mosaic cutters, freehand scorers, and a glass cutting system.
During the classes, you'll receive step-by-step how-to instructions for how to make your mosaic. You will also learn a new skill per week, including:
  • What adhesives and substrates to use for indoor and outdoor projects and how to prepare the piece for outdoors
  • How to transfer your image onto the board
  • Cutting with mosaic cutters
  • Cutting with a scorer and running pliers
  • How to grout, including how to mix grout colours
  • How to hang your mosaic
This class includes all glass and materials for the workshops, as well as use of all tools and equipment needed to make a mosaic. If you choose to use some specialty glass, there will be an additional charge for that glass, which you can purchase on the day.
This is a great workshop for beginners - you will have a structured workshop and will come away having completed the step-by-step process of making a mosaic for either an indoor or outdoor mosaic and will have a great first mosaic piece to show for it!
Some people work faster than others, so some of you will finish your mosaic on time, some before, and some may not complete. If you finish early, you can make another smaller piece. If you are not finished after 5 weeks, you can attend our open studio at a rate of $15 per hour (half price). We will agree on times with you.
Please note that we do not offer refunds. If you miss a session, you can make it up if we have availability in another of our Mosaic Workshops for Beginners sessions. We reserve the right to not offer you a transfer session.

Please note: Public dates for this class require at least 4 guests to run. In the unlikely event that we don't reach this number, we'll cancel the class; in this case we'll inform you and allow you to get a refund or reschedule, so please watch your email/SMS one day prior to the class.

Knowledge required
This workshop is targeted at people with no mosaic experience or minimal mosaic experience who want to gain a comprehensive understanding of mosaics. It is suitable for adults and teens 16 years and older.
What to bring
  • Some mosaic images/photos or pictures that you like as a launching point and reference for your piece
  • Bring a black texta, ruler, pen, and pencil.
  • Please wear casual clothing and closed shoes.
  • If you want to wear safety glasses, you can bring your own or purchase them here online.

Merryl’s Mosaics and Glass Studio is a mosaic and glass fusing studio where people of all ages come to experience the wonderful world of glass art. We run adult classes, specialised workshops and casual sessions, team building workshops and corporate events in either mosaic or glass fusing. We also offer kids classes, casual sessions and holiday programs. You don’t need any experience to attend. We have great, well-trained and friendly staff who will help you with your creations.
