Ikebana Flower Arranging Course

Experience mindfulness through Japanese culture and the art of Ikebana.

5 x 2 hours Location Brunswick Class size 1 to 10 guests   $750

This five-week course is perfect for complete beginners and anyone curious about Japanese culture----no prior floral experience needed. It has been designed for those who have never formally studied Ikebana.
Course outline:
Session 1 – First Encounter with Ikebana
A brief history of Ikebana and its schools, a live demonstration by Hikari, an introduction to the tools and how to use them, followed by your first Jiyuka (free-style) arrangement.
Session 2 – Jiyuka: Vertical Composition
A free-style arrangement exploring vertical lines. Hands-on practice.
Session 3 – Jiyuka: Horizontal Composition
A free-style arrangement exploring horizontal lines. Hands-on practice.
Session 4 – Jiyuka: Planar Composition
A free-style arrangement exploring surfaces and planes. Hands-on practice.
Session 5 – Miniature Jiyuka
A small finished work within an A4 footprint – condensing everything learned into a compact, complete piece.
A note on course structure:
Session 1 includes a full demonstration; Sessions 2–5 are hands-on practice sessions where students work independently with individual guidance.
Each session builds on the one before it – vertical → horizontal → planar → miniature – progressively developing spatial awareness.
By the end of the course, you will:
  • Learn how to create Ikebana arrangements that bring out the best in each flower stem
  • Enjoy flowers more in your everyday life
  • Develop an eye for discovering the natural beauty of each material
  • Give yourself the luxury of slow, mindful time – a richness in itself
  • Experience mindfulness through Japanese culture
  • Understand the difference between Western flower arrangement and Ikebana

Hikari Noguchi

Hikari Noguchi

Hikari’s journey with Ikebana began 19 years ago in Japan, where she deeply studied the philosophy and techniques of the Ikenobo school. Her expertise is recognised at the highest level, having won the Grand Prix at the Internet Ikebana Exhibition 2019 and twice receiving the Tachibana Prize at the Ikenobo Central Institute of Ikebana in Kyoto.

Beyond technical skill, Hikari spent six years at the Michelin-starred "Sushi Matsumoto" in Kyoto, where she refined her sense of spatial design through seasonal floral arrangements. Now based in Melbourne, she hosts immersive workshops that go beyond flower arranging—sharing the history, philosophy, and "quiet moments" of Ikebana. Her mission is to help people find brilliance and mindfulness through the harmony of nature and space.
