Your teacher
Hello! My name is Phong, I am an award winning Naarm/Melbourne-based designer/maker/textile artist specialising in contemporary quilts and soft sculptures through improv patchwork and hand embroidery. Previously a shoe designer/maker, I took the opportunity to work in textile-based social enterprises in Asia, reinforcing my artisan ethos of the slow and thoughtful hand-work process and its connection to society and the environment. Taking inspiration from these experiences, I developed my textile practice upon returning to Australia in 2018. Using up-cycled/dead-stock fabrics and natural dyes, I prioritise social and environmental care in my practice. I take a considered and intuitive approach, responding to materials and my surroundings. Applying the traditional techniques of hand-quilting, embroidery, assemblage and patchwork, I work with an overtly free hand approach to build compositional complexity.My work has been exhibited at The Wangaratta Art Gallery, SchoolHouse Studios Gallery, Linden New Art Gallery, The Australian Tapestry Workshop, FortyFiveDownstairs Gallery, MARS Gallery, Spring 1883 Art Fair and internationally at QuiltCon (USA) and Ai No Yakata Indigo Museum (Japan). I have collaborated with The Social Studio, The Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild, The Australian Tapestry Workshop, Melbourne Fashion Festival, Design Fringe, Woodleigh School Arts Festival, Melbourne University Student union, Better Life Network and various local councils to facilitate improv hand quilting/stitching and natural dyeing workshops. I have also facilitated workshops overseas in Nepal and Vietnam. I have been Artist in Residence at The Australian Tapestry Workshop (2024), The Braybrook Community-Engaged Artist in Residence (2025) supported by the Maribyrnong City Council and Firbank Grammar School (2026).I enjoy teaching, sharing knowledge and breaking down barriers that may be associated with handwork and textiles. There is no right way, I encourage you to find your own way.
