  • 5/5 from Phil Dormer, attended Dec 2024: The class was excellent fun. We learnt various techniques with the palette knives and Fran gave us encouraging and helpful advice during our practice and actual chosen subject painting session. I really enjoyed painting the quite striking emu portrait and surprised myself with how good it ended up looking by the end of the class. The palette knife techniques gave it a great textured finish that looked very impressive and somewhat classy. The class size was small and my fellow painters were great company and very positive and encouraging of each other. Highly recommended!

  • 5/5 from Tiffany, attended Dec 2023: Fran our teacher was really good very happy with the class, explained and demonstrates techniques easily, and simply, her art studio is comfortable with air conditioning as it was a warm day, all materials were provided, takes a bit of practice to get used to working with palette knives, liked using this painting method as it creatives a lot of texture in paintings, think I would like to return to one of Frans classes again to continue to learn and practise more, thanks Fran for a great class Alot of fun highly recommend it. Try finding the fish in my painting.
  • 5/5 from Rosi, attended Dec 2023: Fran introduced our small class to the palette knife technique using acrylic paints and a thickening agent (mixed with the paint) to produce a thick medium to apply to a canvas board. Frans instructions were clear and the lesson was very organised with all materials provided by Fran. The step by step instructions were easy to follow. The lesson was fun and everyone in the class produced a lovely artwork. I can't wait to do another of Frans Palette knife classes. Highly recommended.
  • 4/5 from Kaydee, attended Dec 2023: Fran, as always, is a good and patient teacher. She helped me with the drawing and then a lot with technique. It isn't really my 'medium' but it was a fun afternoon and I learned some new things. Back to watercolour.

Fran is an artist; an educator, neither overshadows, they simply entwine and enrich one another.
At a young age Fran discovered the value of creating art in her daily life. The act of art helped Fran express her identity. The process of developing an idea, especially with jewellery, seeing that idea come to completion by Fran's own hand filled her with satisfaction and accomplishment.  Fran began to see how creating art helped other aspects of my life and learning.
Fran is inspired by nature, patterns, form and texture. Each created piece portrays a slice of life, a perspective of the world in which we all live. Her mediums span painting and jewellery to collage and stitching. They all bring joy, though not everything turns out how she envisaged.
In particular Fran sees the unique design and individually handcrafted nature of bespoke jewellery as an ornamental way of extending personal self-expression. During the creative process, she is mindful that someone will be wearing the piece and it will come alive only when it finds its owner.
Fran is most comfortable in the studio classroom teaching art than in any other place or endeavour. It fills her soul to help others learn by exposing them to tools, materials and techniques of Fran's trade and then develop their skills and confidence in the creative medium.
Through support, conversation and laughter, I set a welcoming scene of free expression.
Ladybird Design Creative Studio is the culmination of creating a life around my passions of art, jewellery and teaching. It frees Fran to take a piece of silver, blank canvas or paper, turn it into a beautiful thing and share it with the world every day. Fran believes now more than ever that pursuing one’s passions makes life more colourful and vibrant, gives us pleasure and purpose, but most of all it reminds us of who we are.
Fran would love to share the joy of creating and making with you.
