Raku Firing Pottery Workshop

Discover this fast-paced and captivating firing process with dazzling results

6.5 hours Class size 1 to 8 guests       $250

Join this Raku pottery firing process in Melbourne with Jack Latti!
Arrive and check out the studio gallery for inspiration and grab a cup of tea to settle in.
Next, a variety of glazing techniques will be shown, and a generous selection of over eight glazes will be available for decorating your pot. You will then dive into glazing the pots that you have brought with you or ones purchased as an add-on to the workshop, with the guidance of Tania and Jack.
Next, the group will help carry the pots to the kiln and watch Jack expertly load the first pots into the Raku kiln. As the kiln climbs in temperature until it reaches over 800 degrees, we will wait and enjoy some morning tea. Once the kiln has reached temperature, everyone will gather around and watch the red-hot pots get removed from the kiln and plunged into coffee grounds in reduction bins.
After about an hour, the pots will cool, and it will be time to scratch around in the coffee grinds searching for treasures. The pots will be covered in carbon, which adds a lovely layer of drama as they will require a gentle scrub to reveal the jewel-like glazes beneath.
There will be multiple firings throughout the day, and the pace will fluctuate from intense, high-pressure moments of excitement to a slower-paced waiting game. This will leave opportunities for both a group lunch and conversations about the firing technique and glaze chemistry.
By the end, you will leave this workshop re-energised and inspired by the Raku firing process, as well as taking with you some glistening handmade ceramic pieces fresh from the kiln. And of course, creating connections amongst like-minded people.
Most importantly, those who are looking to further their pottery/ceramic practice will leave armed with more knowledge for their pottery toolkit.

  • 5/5 from Nicholas Lee, attended Jul 2026: I had such a fantastic day at Jack’s Raku firing workshop on Friday. Jack did an incredible job fitting in three firings throughout the day, which meant everyone had plenty of opportunities to experiment, and the results were absolutely stunning. I didn’t have any of my own bisque-fired pieces ready, so I bought a few beautiful pieces from Jack to glaze instead, and I’m so glad I did. There was an excellent selection of glazes to choose from, making it easy to create some really unique finishes. It was also a real treat spending the day in Jack’s studio. They were in the middle of a five-day wood firing, so there were other potters around as well, which created such a welcoming, creative atmosphere. Lunch was a lovely shared spread, with everyone bringing something to contribute, and it really added to the sense of community. All in all, it was an amazing experience. Whether you’ve done Raku before or you’re trying it for the first time, I’d highly recommend this workshop. I’ll definitely be back for another one!
  • 5/5 from Melissa Di Mieri, attended Jun 2026: Second class and looking forward to move
  • 5/5 from Paula Lindley, attended May 2026: What a wonderful immersive experience our all day raku workshop was at Studio Nioka in Research! Introduced to this traditional process by our host Jack we were guided to select glazes from an array of examples to decorate our ceramic forms. Some of us had already come prepared bringing our pre-made bisqued ware to the workshop, but pots were also kindly provided courtesy of Tania from the Kiln Room. Three different kilns had been purpose built for the occasion in the grounds outside Jack’s studio and this is where the real magic began. As we watched Jack seamlessly stack and fire each kiln on repeat throughout the day, we were continuously excited by the transformation each pot revealed. Not only delighted by our own surprising and creative results, but in awe and wonder at the incredible diversity of our collective talents! True camaraderie prevailed! Personally, I am ready to do it all again, and soon!

  • 5/5 from Caitlyn McIntyre, attended Oct 2025: Had a wonderful time at Jack’s Raku workshop. We started the day with Jack explaining the history and process of Raku, then we went on to start our glazing while the kilns warmed up. Popped the first batch in, finished our glazing and then had a lovely shared lunch while we waited for results. After lunch things got firey and busy and then wrapped up the day with washing our pots to see our results It was a great workshop, very fun, and Jack was a great teacher and Raku guide!
  • 5/5 from Peter Fisher, attended Oct 2025: Generous knowledge sharer. Be brave with glazes and combustibles and see what the kiln gods reward you with.
