Would you love to make your own cards and wrapping paper? Or maybe beautiful layered artworks and fabric designs?
Foam block printing offers a similar aesthetic to traditional lino block printing but with a simpler, more accessible approach.
Your tutor for this workshop is experimental printmaker Rachael Lee who will guide you through this exciting process.
In this class, you'll have fun designing your shapes and cutting them out using scissors to create a series of foam-shaped printing blocks. Your shapes could be geometric, abstract, or inspired by the natural world.
You'll print your foam shapes onto quality papers to create greeting cards and a layered print 28cm x 19cm.
You’ll gain skills in:
  • Designing your blocks and using tools to create textured surfaces
  • Getting the best results when hand printing your blocks
  • Building up layers in your image
  • Creating exciting colour combinations
  • Balancing texture, shape, and line in your composition
Take home your uniquely made printing blocks to continue hand printing at home. You can create all sorts of gifts for your family and friends including cards and tags, artworks, wrapping paper and printed textiles.

Location

Art from the Urban Wilderness at Hive Studios - Hive Studios, Unit 13/10 Depot Street, Banyo QLD

The studio is located in a commercial complex on the corner of Earnshaw Road and Depot Street, near the old Golden Circle Cannery. As you enter the complex, look for the number #13 and the Art from the Urban Wilderness signs. There are 3 onsite car parks. During the week, we recommend you park on the road and walk up the driveway. If you have lots of gear you can drop it off and then park. If you need to park close to the door for accessibility reasons, let us know prior so we can reserve a park for you. On weekends or after hours, you can park within the complex in a marked car parking bay (not in front of roller doors), as its very quiet then.

Your teacher can also travel within 50 kms of Banyo, to a venue of your choice for a private class.

  • 5/5 from Donna Maysey, attended Apr 2025: Foam block printing class - Rachel is a great teacher. She offered great tips and practical advice and was very encouraging of everyone's work. It was a lot of fun and is something I'd like to explore further. It was good to see how different everyone's pieces were.
  • 5/5 from Sandra Pearce, attended Feb 2025: I really enjoyed Rachel's workshop making my own foam stamps. I found the technique easy to follow and execute, much easier than cutting lino but with similar results. It was fun creating patterns with my stamps and I'll be able to use them again at home to print onto fabric and to make some wrapping paper. Highly recommended.
  • 5/5 from Cindy Maree Irons, attended Feb 2025: Great class and teacher & lovely to learn something new.I hope to go back for another lesson.
  • 5/5 from Joanne Rogers, attended Feb 2025: Time flew by this morning. We were able to see a number of examples of finished projects and objects in the studio for inspiration. There was a lot of info about the products and where to source them to be able to continue at home. Then we were able to make our own printing blocks with help if needed, then print them on to paper. Plenty of colours and advice about colours was available to experiment with. Great relaxed an fun approach to creating a result I was happy with even though I have little experience with art. I’d definitely go again.
  • 5/5 from Judith Thompson, attended Feb 2025: Rachael is an excellent teacher using clear and precise instructions as well as demonstrations to ensure a good understanding of the technique. The class could have been longer - I was ready to carry on experimenting!

Rachael Lee approaches her art practice with the same curiosity that she brings to exploring her local natural surroundings. She works with non-toxic experimental printmaking techniques, creating layered works using linocut, etched linocut, stencils, collagraph, drypoint and monoprinting. By combining shape, line and texture in her prints she seeks to highlight the underlying patterns, rhythms and soothing effects of nature.

Rachael is passionate about sharing her printmaking knowledge and over the last ten years has exhibited, given artist talks and run workshops for teachers, students and community groups in Southeast Queensland.
