Do you love the layered, expressive world of collage? If so, you’re going to be absolutely hooked on this tactile way of building prints from texture and tone!
Collagraphs are a wonderful way to explore printmaking, texture, tone, colour, and collage all at once in this one-day workshop with artist Rachael Lee.
Whether you’re a complete beginner to printmaking or looking to refine your technique, your tutor, Rachael Lee, is here to guide you with warmth and expert tips she’s gathered over years of artistic practice.
In this class, we’ll craft a series of small collagraph plates - each exploring unique lines, textures, and tones - before bringing them together into stunning, multi-layered artworks.
What you’ll discover and create:
  • Mastering Tone & Texture: Learn how to build compelling imagery by incorporating texture and tone in meaningful, creative ways.
  • The Art of Inking: Explore vibrant colour combinations and professional inking techniques.
  • Press Skills: Get comfortable preparing papers and pulling your own prints on the etching press.
  • Creative Play: Experiment with dynamic techniques like "wet-on-wet" printing, ghost prints, and bleed prints.
By the end of the day, you’ll walk away with a deeper understanding of what makes a successful collagraph, your very own set of custom plates, and a series of beautiful prints to share with family and friends. Plus, you’ll leave with all the confidence and skills you need to keep exploring your printmaking journey at home!

Location

Art from the Urban Wilderness at Hive Studios - Hive Studios, Unit 13/10 Depot Street, Banyo QLD

The studio is located in a commercial complex on the corner of Earnshaw Road and Depot Street, near the old Golden Circle Cannery. As you enter the complex, look for the number #13 and the Art from the Urban Wilderness signs. There are 3 onsite car parks. During the week, we recommend you park on the road and walk up the driveway. If you have lots of gear you can drop it off and then park. If you need to park close to the door for accessibility reasons, let us know prior so we can reserve a park for you. On weekends or after hours, you can park within the complex in a marked car parking bay (not in front of roller doors), as its very quiet then.

  • 5/5 from Nerida Kingsford, attended Oct 2026: I attended The Collograpy Workshop with Artist, Rachael Lee today 3 October, 2026 at Hive Studios Banyo. Rachael Lee is a very talented print maker and artist. She provided very detailed instructions and also provided visual examples for us to follow and to understand the process. Rachael was extremely generous with her assistance and tuition too. Rachael has excellent customer service. The Hive Studio at Banyo is wheelchair accessible and has a disabled toilet too. Rachael was very accommodating for my specific disability needs as I’m in a wheelchair. Rachael set up an accessible workstation for me and assisted whenever required. Rachael also regularly checked with me if I required additional assistance too. I’m extremely pleased with the finished printed artworks and all the extensive information provided by Rachel Lee. I can definitely recommend any workshops at Hive Studios Banyo as well as enrolling in any art courses by Rachael Lee. Thank you so much Rachael. Nerida Kingsford 03/10/26
  • 5/5 from Elizabeth Pfaff, attended Oct 2026: Such a lovely day. Collagraphic printing was new for me. But all parts of the process were explained and demonstrated clearly. Our tutor, Rachael, was very supportive - providing practical advice, but also encouraging our individual creativity. Also a very nice studio setting for our creative endeavours. A very rewarding experience all round. I will be back for more.
  • 5/5 from Cassy Baker, attended Oct 2026: I enjoyed the crafting the 3printing plates and the actual printing part was the best wish we had a bit more time on this

Rachael Lee approaches her art practice with the same curiosity that she brings to exploring her local natural surroundings. She works with non-toxic experimental printmaking techniques, creating layered works using linocut, etched linocut, stencils, collagraph, drypoint and monoprinting. By combining shape, line and texture in her prints she seeks to highlight the underlying patterns, rhythms and soothing effects of nature.

Rachael is passionate about sharing her printmaking knowledge and over the last ten years has exhibited, given artist talks and run workshops for teachers, students and community groups in Southeast Queensland.

Art from the Urban Wilderness is a community art studio located at Hive Studios in Banyo, northside Brisbane/Meanjin.
