3 hours Class size 12 to 40 guests       $75 (PayPal Pay in 4 available)

Celebrate your favourite companion by turning their unique personality into a hand-drawn portrait.

In this relaxed, beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll learn how to create a detailed coloured pencil portrait of your pet, guided step by step by an experienced artist and children’s book illustrator, Samara Dixon.

Using reference photos, we’ll cover the essentials of drawing animals with confidence, from basic proportions and facial structure to layering colour, building texture, and capturing fur, eyes, and expression.

Coloured pencils are a forgiving and beautiful medium, perfect for creating rich detail without the pressure of paint.

Whether you’re drawing a dog, cat, or another beloved animal, this workshop is designed to support all skill levels. You don’t need prior drawing experience; just a photo of your pet and a willingness to take your time and enjoy the process.

By the end of the session, you’ll have a finished (or nearly finished) portrait and the skills to continue refining your work at home.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to work from a photo reference
  • Basic animal proportions and facial structure
  • Coloured pencil techniques: layering, blending, and burnishing
  • How to build fur, depth, and expressive details
  • Tips for capturing personality, not just likeness

Please note: This class requires at least 5 students to run. In the unlikely event that we don't get this number of students, we'll cancel the class and fully refund you and inform you via email, so please watch your email a few days prior to the class.

- A take-home pet portrait of your own making (plus new skills to keep practising)

Samara Dixon

Wildlife Artist, Illustrator, and Author

Samara Dixon is a Melbourne based Artist, Author and Illustrator who has always had a passion for drawing and wildlife. However, her art journey came about through volunteering at a wildlife shelter during the 2019/2020 bush fires.

Samara helped at the shelter every week for over two years, assisting the animals with caring, feeding, cleaning and was even part of some releases. It was an amazing experience! But Samara wanted to do more to raise awareness and help the shelter. Hence Samara started drawing the animals there, with the intention of creating an educational children’s book to inform children about what shelters do. The purpose was also to give the book sale proceeds to the shelter to assist with their running costs.

The first book Samara wrote and illustrated is called “Willow the bare nosed wombat”, based on Willow, the very first wombat Samara ever met and helped care for at the shelter.

Since then, Samara has written and illustrated three more children’s books: “They may wave back Hello”, They may wave Hello Too”, and “Felix the Eastern Grey Roo”, all based on Australian Wildlife.

The wildlife shelter is now taking a well-earned break, however Samara is still drawing wildlife and making children’s books. And has also branched into other avenues, such as pet portraits.

Samara’s work is done in the hope that her quirky, yet realistic drawing style will help people love and acknowledge animals. Samara wants her art to help raise awareness about how precious our animals and their habitats are, plus highlight the need to protect and preserve for future generations.
