  • 5/5 from Daisy Bojsen, attended Oct 2025: The class was a real treat. I wonder if there could be a slightly longer class on the weekend, perhaps starting at 10:30 with a nibble lunch with wine where we can browse each Painter’s work and share. Then after 45mins continue our painting ending at 3PM. To allow Painters to be a little more detailed with their artwork. Sonja is friendly, welcoming, easy going, flexible, generous, unpretentious, down to earth, knowledgeable about painting techniques and willing to assist others with their artwork using this knowledge. I painted my version of a Blue Wren with Flowering Gum. I have include a photo I took this morning from my kitchen bench to show a friend what I created in my class last night. In regards to using my gift card, I did have challenges as I made online chat inquiries for the terrarium class in Mawson Lakes and received no reply. I was also interested in possible using my gift voucher to attend French Quiche Pastry Lesson however the dates clashed with my working hours. I thought of dancing but really was up for fast dancing. My initial Blue Wren Painting inquiry about future dates seemed to go unnoticed with no reply. Guess I wanted to ask a few questions to feel confident before actually booking a class but then decided to when I found a class that suited me date/time wise, all seemed to fall into place with me being able to ask questions after class confirmation.
  • 5/5 from Heleb Thacker, attended Oct 2025: Writing Dominica on behalf of herself and Helen. We had a ball. Learning and painting together under the excellent tutelage of Sonya If we lived closer we’d be going to many more.
  • 5/5 from Marg Whelan, attended Oct 2025: I thoroughly enjoyed the class. I really appreciated the way Sonja gave us a balance of guidance and support to develop our skills along with the opportunity to express our individuality. Such a friendly welcoming class. Great food and wine is a bonus!

My name is Sonja Maclean and I am a visual Artist and Teacher.
With a love of colour, my aim is to inspire, bring joy, laughter and radiate Light through my work.
I currently have 2 studios at the Fleurieu Arthouse in McLaren Vale, South Australia where I display my artwork as Sonja Maclean ART. One studio is for my creating my own artwork, primarily acrylic works on canvas and the other for Teaching adult students weekly.
I am formerly trained and have spent many years in Adelaide and the Northern Territory as an Arts administrator, Arts Officer, Arts Manager, Festival Director, TEACHER and of course an Arts practitioner (artist) I have a career spanning 40 years in the Arts.
I have always been inspired by the regional flora and fauna of the places Ive lived or been called to and the Fleurieu is no exception.
My work depicts people, stories, the communities and lives of those living in often remote or ‘special’ places, where the natural, nature, has lived and breathed. Where the stars are brighter, the Moon is larger. Where the trees glow and creatures and people stir in the night, at dusk and at twilight. Where stories colour the nature of a community, tell its history or talks about its creation. Places untouched and nurtured for many thousands of years and beyond.
I love sharing my love of Art to anyone who is drawn to creating and teaching techniques that not only get them started but enable them to produce quality artwork.
I have a BVA and Cert. 3 in Assessment and Training.
I have worked with both children and Adults, ongoing.
I was responsible for Arts development prior to and with Country Arts SA and teaching on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunyjatjara Lands SA for approx 10 years.
I was Arts Manager, Central Australia with Arts NT for almost 7 years where I assisted artists and creatives with arts grants and regional arts development based at the Araluen Cultural Precinct
I have run team bonding sessions, large group Art events, music events and The Alice Springs Festival, in Year of the Outback 2001.
I have been featured in news articles, reviews, radio and TV and a variety of Arts publications over the years.
At the end of the day...I LOVE ART! I look forward to working with you on your arts journey
