Important Prerequisite: This class is open to returning students only. You must have completed either the 4-Week Complete Throwing Basics course or a Wheel Throwing Beginners Taster. If you have prior pottery experience but have not been to one of our classes before, please contact the studio prior to booking. Thank you.
Our experienced teachers will help you continue developing your pottery skills in this casual class for ongoing students. We do not operate on a fixed-term schedule. Casual classes are completely flexible. Attend classes as often as you like, on any day you wish! Enjoy the relaxed and social atmosphere of our studio alongside other students at a range of levels, from beginners to potters with many years of experience.
Returning students must provide their own clay and tools, and firing is additional, charged at $10 per kilo.
Please note: This is a class designed for adults, and we do not allow bookings for children under the age of 16.
What you'll get
Improve your skills on the pottery wheel while learning:
  • Wedging and preparing clay for throwing
  • Further techniques for centring on the wheel
  • Additional support learning cylinders and bowl forms
  • How to turn your forms
  • How to pull handles and attach them to cylinders to create coffee mugs, jugs, etc.
  • Basic glazing and decorating techniques; a selection of underglazes and dipping glazes are provided!
  • Creating many different forms, including casserole dishes, flatware such as plates and platters, and much, much more.
Knowledge required
Basic beginner skills are required, so you need to have completed a beginner class at either our studio or another.
What to bring
Bring your own clay, tools, and towel. Although clay washes out easily, we recommend wearing clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, or you can bring an apron! Shoes are also required at all times in the studio for safety reasons.

We have set up our studio to bring together pottery and ceramics in a combined space and to be an affordable, fun place where anyone can come and enjoy creating with clay. Our studio is a place where there are very few rules except to respect your fellow artists, their work, and the studio, to relax and learn that there is no end to the possibilities when working with clay.
At SaJo Ceramics you can...
Join a casual pottery class or social pottery & ceramics session; take a workshop to have a go at the pottery wheel, take one of our 6-week courses to learn the basics of throwing, or just use our Melbourne studio facilities on a casual basis. Discover beautiful stoneware handmade tiles for a unique splashback or outdoor wall feature or make your own! Explore a huge catalogue of ceramic pieces to paint in both acrylic paints and fired finishes, made to order from vintage and modern bisque designs. Buy handmade tile blanks for your school or community project, ready for you to paint, carve, or decorate, or just drop in and chat with fellow artists while enjoying a cuppa.
